Okay, advice heeded and will begin the chipping off process at the weekend.

Regarding boards, am I right in thinking MRPB us fine throughout with Bal tanking all over the shower and bath area? Also, is there any benefit to sealing the board joints with silicone as well as screwing to the batons?

Standard board will fine if your tanking around the bath but you will need 6x3's a lot easier to handle and get 12.5mm.
