Wet Room

Hello, I have a ground floor bathroom with concrete floor, having removed the existing bath tub, wash hand basing and lavatory. I would like to convert the room to a ‘wet room’ with wash hand basin, toilet and shower.
I have hacked up the sand and cement screed, that was on top of the concrete, with a view to reforming the same with a fall to a floor level waste outlet incorporating a trap, I intend to use ‘poly safe hydro’ flooring to the finished surface. Any tips, instructions or advice greatly appreciated many thanks and best regards

Many thanks for reply, I did try to contact repeatedly today by telephone but no answer, so I sent email, still no reply as yet,

My main queerie is: Is it feasable to install a shower trap (with waste pipe) into the ground of a ground floor concrete room screed the floor and then use anti slip 'poly safe hydro' floor covering or similar, so as to avoid the costly some of the 'wet room former' resin trays as they are so over priced for what they are. In essence what did we do before these trays became on the market?

:welcome:Clancy - As long as you have sufficient falls to your outlet then whatever your waterproof floorcovering is going to be (tiles/vinyl) then you can create a wetroom.
The surface material must be impervious and you should have no pooling.
At the outlet trap they usually have a couple of options for height and for the thinner floor covering tend to overlap into the trap.
Preparation of the subfloor is important and the thinner materials will show any undulations or pimples.

Many thanks, I appreciate the 'pimple' scenario.
The room I refer to is just under 2 metre square, and if I was to purchase the wetroom former at £299 plus vat, (unless any one knows of some where to purchase at sensible prices) which only covers approx one third of the room I am still faced with some 'hands and knee skills' !
Its this part where I need some help from above, so all and any tips guidance advice criticism is most appreciated. Thanks again.

I dont agree with you when you say that the trays are overpriced, they are manufactured to take away the water without having to form your own falls, if installed correctly they are guaranteed to perform. They are quick to install and have a factory fitted trap. All these plus points are reflected in the price. Have you ever fitted a tray former?

hi daimondtiling, with respect, I/we or whoever still has to form a fall to the tray, do they not? A wash hand basin, a lavatory pan, a bath tub, a stainless steel sink and drainer etc, are all manufactured to do similar if not more and dont cost any thing like that.
Sorry! I cant see the justification of three hundred pounds or more (450 some outlets), for a tray. :20:

I see your point and understand it, but with regards to just the shower area I would rather fit a pre formed tray than have to screed in falls to a drain.

It sounds like you've looked around and £299 might be one of the best prices you can get, it's either that or pay a professional to form your own custom jobby, or try to do it from a DIY point of view and seriously risk screwing up what could be a wetroom for life if done correctly. I don't think you can put a price on that to be honest.

Have a really good look around, if you can find a former cheaper then let us know, but I don't think you will to be honest, it's the reason we chose wetdecs as a supplier to the forum members.

In the past, when formers were very expensive, I have chopped up lengths of 2x4 and 4x4, and used tanked thick MDF, and created my own sort of former, I've even done it with underfloor heating under it, and spent an age ensuring the trap is 110% sealed with the tanking. And it's time consuming creating the right falls and whatnot.

It's a skilled job and worrying even for a professional. If it goes wrong, the chances are the lot has to come up again.

I'd seriously consider either getting just a standard shower tray if £299 is too much, or just standing the costs of the former which is guaranteed to work, as said above.

Not trying to put you off, or sway you to even wetdecs, but you certainly don't want to do the job twice.

A tiler on the forum said once "tiling correctly makes your work immortal" - as it should last more than a lifetime. We're seeing more and more corners cut and more and more jobs needing to be redone during this economic climate when people are scrimping and saving on the wrong things. That's all I'm saying.

Checkout lots of other threads related to this on the forum and take it from there perhaps?
