wetroom- no former just plywood?

I'm new to this forum and have been lurking and enjoying all the valuable insights from all you guys. Now I have a questions: We are looking to fit a very tight en suite in loft conversion. A shower tray would be very awkward, so we are hoping to make a wetroom.
As costs are spiraling, I was thinking of omitting the expense of a former (as we are creating all the floors new anyway) and creating the drops with the joists and the plywood on top (or maybe some other waterproof flooring sheet?) then inserting a square drain in the corner as per sketch on attachment :[/FONT]

Then tank and tile over. (probably large format tiles with mosaics around the edges and around the drain, as well as for a border on the wall)

What are the pros and cons of this approach?

Any suggestions on which drains are easiest to fit in the corner? (we were first looking at trench drains, but they are very expensive as well)

What tanking would you suggest that is effective, can be laid by a first timer and won't break the bank? (Saw Mira tanking kit for £65- is that any good?) We have 2.5m2, so not big, but I need to keep the costs down, without ending up with a leaky wetroom.

The choices out there are just too much!!!:mad2:

Hi Moggy, Wetdecs will be along shortly I am sure. He is our resident Wetroom sponsor and contributor and will point you in the right direction.

One thing though, do not skimp on this cost wise. It needs to be done properly as a leak could have dire cosequences for the rest of you house structure and could ultimately cost thousands if not done correctly. Put a bit more into your budget if you can.

The correct interaction between former and drain

A shower area with Specifically calculated falls so that water drains locally without puddling

No break in materials eliminating damage through lateral movement.

Former manufacturers have done it before and cant run away

Fabricated former + gulley £260

Recommended former not insulation board + peace of mind approx £340




To install a wet room in any wood floored upstairs situation a shower former / gulley with an off the roll waterproof tanking / uncoupling membrane should be used...........


Unfortunately there is no recommended alternative to this and if you compare any saving you might make doing half a job with your insurance loading there can be little dispute.
