Busy day today finishing a bathroom then farming duties the rest of the day.

I was collecting a few tools at my parents house when i saw an ambulance coming up their lane, it splits off onto my sisters building site. I knew no one was at home with the folks so guided the ambulance to the site.

My mate, the builder had fallen off some 'questionable' scaffolding at a fair height head first and landed on his neck.
To cut a long story short half his scalp was hanging off with what looked like a fractured skull, it turned out the skull and brain are OK in the ct scan...for now.
He has a broken bone in his neck and back and fluid in the lungs. If he had fallen slightly differently he would have damaged the spinal cord.

Speaking to his wife this evening she couldnt believe how lucky they where. She says that with the hindsight of sitting a few hours earlier thinking the worst. He has a broken back, neck and severe head truma and as his wife says very lucky.

I must admit i said a prayer or two today, something i dont normally do.
If there is one thing we can all take from this is please take time to make everything as safe as is reasonably practible. If it costs another hour or day on the job then it it worth it to go home to your loved ones in one bit. Dont let lady luck decide for you....

Re: Waht a day: HS & E

Damn lucky man there Davy, I met ambulances flying in Newry earlier too so someone else in trouble too by looks.Nicola doesn't need a fatality about there!Hope he recovers well.

Re: Waht a day: HS & E

Its early days but hope he will be back on his feet soon, be at least 2-3 months before he can think about work. It his job from start to finish so im not too sure (or care one bit considering) how much it will delay things. Saying that he had all the trades lined up to first fix as far as plastering so things will keep moving I suppose.

Re: Waht a day: HS & E

I've found over the years the smaller builders who do the domestic related extensions are lacking on the H&S situation, I've pushed my luck at times and others, as it proves from your post, have'nt been so.

Wishing him a speedy recovery..

Re: Waht a day: HS & E

Scary that Davy, It sounds like he was very lucky.
My brother fell from a ladder, 3 stories, and smashed both his arms about 2 years ago. He's still not right and will never have full use of em, all by scimping on h&s/common sense to get the job done. It's not worth it.
Hope he's better soon

Seen the builder in hospital tonight. He is sitting up and hs been standing. Just has a neck brace on while they make him a sort of upper body suit to restrict his movement as the bones are fractured and still in place. He is still waiting on a plastic surgeon to sow his scalp back up but by all accounts he is making a really speedy recovery. Phew!
