What do you use for a straight edge???

I use feather edges with holes drilled through. Or 18mm ply cut in to 3 inch strips.

2.5 x 5 cm wooden battens, make sure you pick straight ones at the sawmill and not the boomerangs..

i Hav'nt fixed battens for years. Its easier and more accurate (imo) to start with a low datum line and work up from there.

what about when fitting large formats especially say 600x300 limestone or 1000 x 350s ?? about 80% of my work these days is large formats and stone , battens are a must for these bad boys...

Yes ANDY-P Even for large format tiles and natural stone. Set out the job,establish where the bottom course will be in relation to the floor and simply start from there. That could mean starting with a cut but i find it to be much easier than fixing battens.

Cant remember the last time i used battens, i tend to either put bottom course on 1st (with large format) or work down from a level line.

With large format tiles I use the lowest line marked and use masonary nails for support.

I use my levels for straight edge

i use plasterboard. cut a 3" strip off, always have a straight edge without having to go through 20 pieces of wood at b and poo and easy to snap around corners

6foot and 8 foot aluminium H section from a stud wall that we demo,d about 10 years ago we took the lot about 10 lengths down to our last three now.
and no battens here either datum and work down to bottom fit bot course and then away jobs a good un:yawn:
