Word of mouth is great, but you can't sit around with you fingers crossed waiting for that to happen, especially whenyour new to the game.

If you get an unlimited amount of calls contract for £10 per month, you can keep ringing potential people - mainly other trades people.
This has to be the cheapest form of advertising becasue most people pay at least that as a phone bill monthly anyway, so long as you ring trades people on there home number in the evening (dont want to be paying mobile rates).

Also getting a stall at a car boot and advertising yourself with a big board you've tiled and have a pile of cards next to you might work too.

Also, getting 5000 business cards of ebay for about £80 (300 gsm card stock full colour) is money well spent.
You want to hand delviver at least 1000 to every house in your immediate area, once every few months.
Also make sure tiles shops, kitchen and bathroom showrooms, tool hire places, plumbers merchants withing a 10 miles radius are regulary topped up with your cards.

Ideally make sure your business cards have your web address so that potential people can see your portfolio, and get testimonials, giving you the edge.

I advertise in the local paper, I have been going 7 weeks and have work every week. I have had a few days of no work but not a lot.

I have had at least 6 or 7 other quotes for work I haven't got too. Image plays a big part I think. ie Company name and how YOU present yourself.

If you have a website and clothing put the two together and have your web address around the bottom of your collar that way easily spotted if your stood in a queue and its at eye level (unless your'e under 3 ft) they may have a peek at your site first to see what work youv'e actually done .

nice one!

Also have you ever seen the screens that are at the front of the post office queue mainly in the town centres?
It costs around £15 a week to advertise on there and it flicks your details up every 5 minutes through the day for around 20 seconds. Ideal if you have a website and also people just can't help watching!

my van brought in work from day one, whenever i change the van its the first thing i do, it cost well over £1200 when it was done last year but its more than worth it, my shirts have the same logo as do my jackets and its carried forward to my business cards which look great, i spent £120.00 on some company pens (too much stella the night before and the rep got to me) but they worked, i'm amazed when i ask how people got my number and they say " a friend you did some work for had one of your pens" get the image right from van to clothing and stationary and it pays dividends
