Hi, shower is 1100x700, mainly aquaboard and a bit of normal plasterboard skimmed.

Thanks :)

hi mate
just tape aquaboard joints with tanking tape, Silicon gap between shower tray and aquaboard, for pasteboard use first primer and then apply PCI Lastogum tanking system, or Bal wp1 waterproofing coating, and will be ready to tile
Good luck ! :hurray:

Multiple substrate and your going to paint a membrane on how stable is that going to be ???

ive got some gaps in the corners where the boards kind of meet :), what should i fill them with? silicon ? it will be tanked over

Silicon them before you tank - it won't hurt:thumbsup:

yes mate Silicon is the best choice

Well hooray for Silicon what if he ends up using a tape that is unstable used with Silicon why not joint properly so you also have strength ???

You are working with unstable walls and transitions and advising a novice by his own admision looking for the way to do a job properly

How much did that cost you mate

70 quids mate - not cheap but I am limited on what I can get in a hurry where I am:thumbsup:

Well hooray for Silicon what if he ends up using a tape that is unstable used with Silicon why not joint properly so you also have strength ???

Climb down off your high horse mate :prrr:, I was merely suggesting siliconing the joints prior to taping and tanking to give a seal underneath the tanking  there is ALWAYS what ifs and why fors but I can only work with what I am told :mad2:

Homelux matting from Topps or CTD £31+vat....Superor to a paint on kit

There are correct ways to do tanking,Silicon should have nothing do do with the tanking process , Learn from your mistakes and get of your high horse:lol::lol:

Lee took the time to join TF ask questions and seek advice on a job he is doing the very least we can do is advise him on good practice.
I am not a smart ar$e but there is a way to do things and reaching for a tube of Silicon is not one of them

hi wetdecs, say for example as lee says one wall is aquaboard and one is skimmed plasterboard on the shower walls why would this realistically be an issue for putting a tanking kit on? and also at internals where the boards meet say there is a small gap 2-3mm also again wouldnt this be better filling with Silicon and also at tray, does Silicon not bond with tanking? im not questioning your advice just wanting to learn if this would be an issue as tanking is something im keen on learning about and have only used 3 or 4 times so far

Hi m8

You are working with 2 different substrates which can move seperate to each other so you have an unstable substrate. To combat this you could overboard with pb or use a crack bridging tanking membrane such as Dura-wp. Either of these will give strength to the substrate, tank and act as a preventative to tiles cracking. Painting on a membrane will get you nowhere as if there is any settlement or movement the transition becomes a crack and your tanking can effectively fail.

also at internals where the boards meet say there is a small gap 2-3mm also again wouldnt this be better filling with Silicon and also at tray, does Silicon not bond with tanking? im not questioning your advice just wanting to learn if this would be an issue as tanking is something im keen on learning about and have only used 3 or 4 times so far

Packing corners or gaps up to 5/6mm should be done with a gypsum / cement based filler, tile adhesive that will adhere to pb. If you pack these with Silicon you smooth it off with your wet finger and coat the surrounding area. the area of Silicon has now become a 20mm skin which nothing will stick to. If working in corners when you bed your tape you get a bridge as the adhesive doesnt take to the Silicon. Plaster boarding is one job tanking is another and they do their own jobs just because the cheaper tanking kits use scrim for their tapes doesnt mean you dont joint your pb properly first.

On bases personally I use grippfil below surface to bond the shower base to the plaster board then pack my 3mm gap at the bottom of tiles with Silicon.

The Silicon / tanking question is a valid one as unless I am mistaken Silicon eats bitumin polymer which is present in tilesafe therefore you wouldnt use the 2 together..........

Hope this gives you some idea of what I was getting at.........
