Where to start/finish tiling

I am tiling bathroom with bath and 700X900 shower enclosure. Walls are to be half tiled all round but fully tiled within shower enclosure. Tiles are 40X25 cm. Ceiling height 2400. Do I go up to ceiling within shower enclosure? How far beyond shower enclosure do I finish vertical tiles. Shower enclosure is lined on 2 sides with hardibacker board.
I am a keen DIYer and would appreciate advice.

Hi Jim, fully tile shower enclosure up to ceiling height, at the outer edge of your enclosure mark a plumb line and starting with a full tile work into the corner. The outer edge of your shower enclosure doors should sit flush with the edge of your tiles then. Hope this helps.

Many thanks Doug, that is really helpful. The only thing is, is there not a risk of cracking the tile when attaching the shower enclosure so close to the edge of the tile?

If you have a 100% coverage of adhesive on the back of the tile it won't matter where you drill the tile.

Many thanks, I feel confident now but I have another dilemma.... Should opposite walls be completely symmetrical with the far left and right rows the same size (this will be the view from the door of the bathroom). My feeling is that they should but then the tiles will not be centred over the basin which is in the middle of the right hand wall. Arrgh, help please!

In an ideal scenario that would be the case Jim, but in truth it rarely happens that way, personally (if I'm envisaging this correctly) I'd forego centring over the basin to achieve the opposing walls being symmetrical.

good point Paul If so Jim, you want to make sure your tiles are are symmetrical either side of the window gap.

It's going well! The window wall is opposite the door with the bath underneath - not a problem. This was done first without any problems. The 2 walls of the shower cubicle were done today, up to the ceiling as you suggested. Tomorrow will half tile right and left hand walls. Will concentrate on making these walls symmetrical as this will be the view from the door and the first thing you will see.
