this is exactly what i was saying on a thread yesterday about builders doing tiling, why dont they just leave it to people who do it day in and out! What were the reasons you never got the job then Dave?or was it because the builder is a smart arse?

I actually did get the job Bri....i was about to start setting out and noticed the joists flexing at the meeting point to the screed...I phoned the customer to tell him about it and he said discuss it with the builder,,,I did and came back the next day and all he had done was wedge some slaters latt into the soil under the joists and screwed it the the joists for support.....the sleeper wall for the joists had bricks missing and he stuffed some soil in for support...:yikes: and then packed concrete over that thinking i wouldn't notice it...

So when i said it wasn't good enough the wifey of the house wasn't impressed and expressed that he was a top class builder...i said he was a bodger and that the floor wasn't good enough.. i was asked to wait for the builder to come and say exactly what i wanted...after an hr waiting i gave up and said stuff this...and the builder tiled it....my choice to leave but i was NOT putting my name to that floor unless it was right and the builder said it was OK..which it wasn't..

So by the builder sticking his nose into a trade that he had no idea about will now cost the customer dearly and they could not see bad in him.....maybe now they will.

Nearly 41 extra bag at (£15) = over £600 more!
He most likely charged them more labour as well for the 3 weeks.

Sorry Dave i did read that in your original post...well you know you did the right thing.Customer was probably just wanting to save money originally but has cost her dearly!

69 bags lol lol  builders cutting corners they just dont learn slap it up him!:hurray:

Haha will cost them loads extra in the long run, or they will have a poor floor they have to live with.

Reminds me about my friend and his wife whom have been wanting to get their bathroom done up. She has been asking me about getting it tiled for a while, and I also gave them numbers of very good plumber and a very good plasterer.

Job comes around and I ask when they want to get me in.

"Oh we are going with this company that will do everything, tiling is £70 all in extra (4.5msq), and we're going to go with them"

"Good luck" I said "I cant compete with that price"

Saw them the other day, the tiling is shonky (her words) and has had the tiler back a few times to try to fix it. And she had the plumbers back in today to point out their snags, and they apparently walked off the job

On a budget, get a budget job, and maybe spend more money in the long run. Ironic really.

70 bags though, thats rediculous. Was he eating it?

Dave, I just did the conversion from sq meters to sq feet, and kgs to pounds, and all I can say now is :yikes:

I must say Dave I admire you walking of the job. You totally did the right thing as well you know And I think your, and many other tilers on here's aproch to not fixing other peoples bodge jobs is one of the things that makes you great tilers.

I'm still learning this and after a few jobs where I've almost ended up out of pocket because after pricing a job its turned out to be poorly prepaired and I've spent to much time putting it right.

I think it was Doug I told I too am now walking away at the 1st sign of trouble or a customer that is gonna get me to make good someone elses poor workmanship.

as for 69 bags of addie!

Surely some one nicked a pallet? Or he left it out side and it got soaked through? Or a labouar thought it was cement and is now the base for a summer house in the garden?

I'm guessing a dwarf has to walk with a stoop, to stop banging his head on a ceiling now, must be some thickness of addy under those tiles:20:

yer i only got use to the red one now its gone dave if the floor wasnt up to your 28 bags of adh hows it gona handle an extra 30 + scarry:8:

Unbelievable. Have you worked with the builder before? My guess is not again! You were so right to walk. I would be scared of doing that because of the £££ side of things in the short term if I wasn't able to pull jobs forward. Well done though - is the builder listed on contractors forums? Get this thread copied over there!!!

Love the arnie avatar... and no he used all the bags...

It's hard to get your head around how you could possible use a full bag of adhesive for less than a metre of tiles, no matter what shape the floor is.

The adhesive was keraflex maxi...8 hr potlife and 16 hr set....so i don't think so....but i have heard since he has been bedding them an inch thick...😳
how on earth do you get a 25mm bed

and what size notch do you use :yikes:

Perhaps he threw the tiles in the skip and used the tile adhesive to screed the floor with and drew lines in it to look like tiles

Good on you dave for walking i had to do it myself not so long ago, its not a nice thing to have to do, but sometimes it needs doing, It all came good for me in the end,

Just think how that suspended floor is deflecting now with all that extra weight added to it with an extra 41 bags bags of adhesive

It'll be a while before they can walk on them and a few weeks of drying out.

Don't seal wet tiles
