I would say take out the free listing first. What ever you do don't believe the salesperson if they say "oh and there's only a few in" or "we're looking for more tilers specifically for that area" .... as they're salespeople.

I'd consider using the cash on other advertising stints in the local rag maybe, maybe get some leaflets done and do a drop, get a website or brand your clothes / van etc.

Call a couple of the other tilers in there and ask them if they get much business from it. Some will hang up, some will answer you (if they feel stringly about it either way).

Search the forum for yellow pages. And checkout the 'finding work' thread in the arms.

I have a funny one now regarding the Yellow pages.

I called up months ago to get an advert sorted.

They sent out some paper work for me to sign to say what size advert I wanted to book, did the design, said I would pay the fee upfront in full.
The advert got made up then I had to sign it off one way or another either by sending back the forms signed that they then sent out to me, or log into my account to click to sign it off that way, neither of which I did.

I had also said to them on the phone that I now wanted to pay by the 0% interest free payments monthly, so they sent out the direct debit forms, which I never filled in and sent back.

So basically, I have not paid anything yet, not signed it off as accepted but they have still put my advert in the book along with the free listing.

Basic reason why I didn't bother to sign it off and pay for it was the amount of other tilers in my Yellow book, and decided I might as well put my £300 into some other form of advertising.
So now I have my advert in the book, not signed off and not paid for, but as it happens my advert is on the second page of tilers, well same double page from the start of tilers section.

So, don't know whats going to happen now

For a bit under £300 you could get 15,000 business cards.

Do you think you could get more result than yellow pages with those mailing them to recently bought houses, houses for sale, attached to cars at diy centres, and posted to homes generally, as well as in tool hire shops, plumbers merchants and tiles shops?

or about the same? or less?
