1970 Hillman Imp purchased in 1977 complete with no heater, door mirrors or heated rear window and nearly forgot plastic seats and no headrests.
Kept it for two years and used to drive around 250 miles a week in it. If it went longer than two weeks without going wrong I was doing well.
These young ones don't know how lucky they are now!

Hurrah, I was waiting for the first Hillman imp, my wifes favourite ever car

A 4 year old Morris Minor De Lux Model - it had a heater - bought of my Dad when he was going to trade it in for a new one in 1968. Paid him the trade in value of £200 and ran it for four years, including taking it to Norway for a year when I was working there. Only non service/wear and tear repair from new was a sheared fan blade and I went mad and replaced the water pump at the same time. Sold it with 97K on the clock for £195 and had them queing in the street in case the first person didn't want it.

Those were the days when you could climb in the bonnet with the engine and if you needed more than a flat screwdriver, a 1/2 inch spanner and a hammer to fix it was a serious breakdown. Two warning lights - ignition and oil pressure - not like modern cars with all these modern cars with all the electronics that cost abot £400 for the garage to fix everytime a light stays on.

Mine was a MkIII Golf 1.3, loved it to bits bit it died. Second was an Astra hatchback, 1.4, loved that and gave it an Aunt when I got a Saxo VTS, 1.6, and I rolled it and was really lucky to come out of it with just a broken nail lol. The only bit of the car that wasn't crushed (it rolled quite a few times) was where my head was, not that my head stopped it crushing, I guess it just kept leaving the floor on that bit as it rolled.

You'd have thought I learnt my lesson then but I didn't, I had after that, a MR2 Turbo, Celica GT4 Turbo, Escort RS Turbo, Corolla T-Spot and a Mitsubishi Spacewagen, a road legal quad, and a 125 crosser to boot. All at the same time, all parked in the drive or on the fronts. Had an MOT, Tax or Insurance renewal nearly every month.

Loved my cars, and still do, though I now just rob the Mrs' car every now and again as the Nivara went back to that hoax of a leasing firm. Just in talks (now I'm back off holiday) with a couple of leasing firms who should be able to sort us all out with decent deals.

Anyway, Gold MkIII was my first. lol :p (waffled a bit there)

So will someone explain to me.............we have all had old sheds/bangers in the past which we got with our own hard earned cash.......or as in Oli's case. Nowt

We all tinkered/fiddled with them and put on the bling (when I say bling.....I mean, it was bling in them days) you remember........go fast stripes, chrome wheel trims and the like.

Nowadays, I can't help wonder where the hell the young-ens of today get the money for the fully blinged up & top of the range customised jobs, todays kids have.

I know "Daddy" will have helped them out....maybe, But a lot of the cars they drive are sports cars compared to the likes of Allegro's and Chevettes.

I had a Chevette as well.........saloon :yikes:. Great car until the wife reversed into a road.....and missed. :mad2::mad2:
