Hi sue...( you feisty old bat..:lol🙂...sorry couldn't resist..

What i meant was the adhesive is suitable for tiling to ply but ply is not suitable for use on walls in a shower... Moisture or thermal stress could cause the tiles to debond and the ply also might not be able to spport the weight of the tiles....typically ply holds around 30kg per sqr mtr this includes adhesive and grout...

But it's the none suitability of ply in a shower....or for wall tiling really as it expands and contracts more than a normal type wall substrate...

As for the haze you have.....well gulf stone dose have to be sealed with a penetrating sealer as it has open pores on the surface from the polishing process...this will be why the grout haze has held....you can get an epoxy haze remove though...

You have had some conflicting advice at your end haven't you....

For that job i would have used hardibacker cement boards for the walls, never use ply for reasons Dave said above, taped the joints and used a flexi cement adhesive and i would also have sealed the tiles as well before grouting, ive never heard of using apoxy grout for an adhesive before,

Thanks, guys. This is really helpful info.
What would be the best for epoxy grout removal? I've found Aqua and Tile Doctor, but the men have been told everything will harm the tiles. Surely this can't be such an uncommon problem?

hi removal of epoxy grout as adhesive ( why call it grout if u use as adhesive)i have never heard of that check with manufacture of grout . grind grout glue of tiles . also any water proofing ////////////////:mad2:

Heard of epoxy was reccomended for adhesive quite a few years ago, think it was glass tiles at the time

hi whitebeam thanks but it just doesnt sound right esp with the size tile being used .6x.6 why not use epoxy adh:20::20:

My tilers were surprised at the recommendation to use epoxy grout, which came straight from the adhesive manufacturers, and it cost a FORTUNE. Everyone since has said it was wrong, which doesn't really help ME.

Choice now, disregarding claims against whoever:
1. Break off all tiles and start again, which will be a truly awful job and could damage the marine ply walls.
2. If that happens, I now don't know what to think of marine ply....
3. Preferably, save tiles by removing epoxy grout haze, but we can't find out how to do that without damaging the tiles.

I will tell the men to do a sample with something or other in the hope that we can avoid wrecking the joint. Any suggestions? I've found something from the Tile Doctor and Aqui...whatsit.

I'm certainly learning a lot about tiling!

Sue

It's the easiest thing to say start again when you are sat behind a computer so I won't. Get your Feisty old bat fangs into those tilers Sue, they owe you a decent job for the money you have lashed out

Are you all saying the tilers should have known better?
They're installing a new kitchen for me next week.....
Not feeling so feisty now.

I would be with holding payment for the time being Sue. Unfortunately there's a couple of other current threads on here with a similar theme.
Where are you at Sue
