As per my sig the shower waste lays directly over the joist(sods law eh)

Anyhow, is it ok to chop away part of the joist or do I need to strengthen it some how

there are rules and regs for notching joists but from what you see nobody adheres to them. Common sense usually prevails, I usually overkill and put noggins in if i 'notch big'!

no, front right (1200 x 900 rectangle) cant turn it as access would be impossible due to other beams and to tight in corner even if I could

Thats what i was gunna suggest it spin it..mmmm not a luver of chopping joists but it can be done if you strengthen properly..

nogins running between cut joist and next or either side ?

and what size (same as joist )

its an 8" joist btw and I'll need to remove 5"

cant the tray be moved away from the wall a couple of inches to clear it ,then ply the gap? or have i got the wrong end of the stick:smilewinkgrin:,steve

There's no way I would want to chop 5" off an 8" joist, it's way beyond anything I've ever seen or done, why so much, shower waste is only 30 - 40 mm ish and as has been asked, what pipe are you using, are you putting in a trap ? I think a rethink is needed mate, can you do a quick sketch showing layout etc
