The sub base is made up of sand with DPM on top then 50mm cellotex and around 80-100mm "screed"/concrete
Now i am not sure i am using the right word for this...
Hi got a job to tile a hallway and downstairs cloakroom in an old property.
Having ripped up the tiles I've found a red floor that isnt paint as I've scratched deep into it. It seems like a dyed cement but is softer than cement?
Anyone know what it is and how to prep for tiles.
I was hoping...

Hi Guys,
Ripped up some tiles on an old floor today. Some of the tiles were came up very easily and there was a very slight damp feel.
It's obviously very minor rising damp as the tiles have been down 30 odd years.
I've looked at the mapei epoxy dpm but it's pricy and only need a very small...

Hi all, I am looking for some advice please.
We are due to have our hall and kitchen tiled, some of which needs levelling. Our tiler is going to level the areas that need levelling. He said he is going to use Trim/Co SX301 for the levelling?
In preparation for him doing the work, we have...
Good evening. It's been a while..
I always visit when I need reliable advice, this is the most helpful forum I know.
As you can see, we are replacing our kitchen and at the same time have removed a floating timber floor and 50mm batterns/insulation for tile preparation. Today I have installed...
First of all a big shout out to everyone that contributes to these forums in terms of help and advice - I don't post often but I really appreciate the tips that I've been able to pick up here - if only I had the time and money to put more of them into practice!
Right now I am having a go at...
Hi All,
I am new to the forum so I apologise for my mistakes.
I have lifted a laminate flooring from a hallway floor to expose loose tiles adhered with a thin layer of what looks to be bitumen.
After reading many people's posts I have scraped as much as I can off. Beneath the screed is a...
Hi, I am a old forum member from several years ago who has just signed up again. Like many others I did some tile training in Harlow and thought I could go out and become a tiler and I did quite a few jobs and they went okay. I enjoy tiling and I'm a bit of a perfectionist (good quality in a...

Absolutely furious with some cowboy builders who are completely taking the biscuit. They've not done near as much as they should have on any given day and are holding up the whole show. And their work is shoddy as heck. I mean they mustn't know how to use a level and clearly haven't the...

Couple of wetroom floors to be fixed in the coming weeks! Travertine wet area mosaics heated wire kit and no antifracture mat and yet to see if tanked. Ceramic tiled wetroom floor has piped underfloor heating layed into cement boards foil I think as customer told me, Durabase laid dry no...
Been on here a few months now and have noticed some tilers don't do their own preparations, especially walls? I do whatever it needs, even if it means installing extra dwangs to suit Wedi boards, installing Wedi boards, taping, tanking etc same as floors. I'm interested, the tilers who leave it...
See photo... is this standard preparation for a mosaic glass splash back in the bathroom?
The wall was freshly painted.
Will this need now to be skimmed or can the tiles be applied immediately to this surface with some good adhesive? Is a mesh of some sort required for alignment?
The tiles...
I'd appreciate your suggestions on preparation for tiling over my bath.
Photo shows the old bath. The new bath will be in by the end of the week. The soil pipe will be boxed in to the width of the bath using Aquapanel, and a mixer shower and concealed bath valves will be attached to it.

Hi everyone,
First time tiler here about to tackle floor tiles (and wall tiles soon too)
First off just want to say this forum is the dogs - lots of great info and help for green behind the ears types like me!

We do the tiling inside this house and we agree to do even outside when the builder finish to prepare the job for us.

Got a feature wall in split face stone tiles to do. Trouble is the tiles are different sizes which create unsightly gaps, more than usual. What's best way to avoid this without cutting every tile with the grinder? Im wedging gaps here and there but still get the odd 4/5mm gap, cheers
Hi all, starting a wet room floor soon, have a few questions I would like some help with!
The floor has already been installed by a builder and has Hardi backer boards down, running up to the tray, but will need levelling before reaching it.
1. Hardi backer is not waterproof, so how does self...
Sorry this has probably been discussed to death here in the past but...
I have been preparing suspended floors by over-boarding with 6mm backer boards then applying a decoupling membrane. I understand this to be the method for chipboard floors but is this excessive for say, tongue and groove...
Hi,
In the process of redoing my front porch (3m2) concrete base with DPM.
With regards to laying SLC fully within a rectangular area should I incorporate expansion joints around the perimeter or is this not needed due to the concrete base.
Many thanks
Paul
After setting out the shower tray lines for envelope cuts do people use the grinder to cut the diagonals so they have a grout joint or just use the tile cutter and have a real thin grout joint (Possibly too thin) so the bond still runs through from outside the former??
