1200 x 900 x 10 mm callibrated brazilian floor slate.

Hi all,

Pls can we have some advise for our up and coming project.
We are thinking of using the above mentioned slate and would like to know a few details from experienced trade personell.

The area to be tiled is approx 60 m2 will it require an expansion joint & if so what is the expansion joint made up of?
The slate will be bedded down onto a clay tile with UFH below whats the best product to use in this instance.

What is the minimum bed depth for a 10mm slate tile off this size so i can work out my finished floor height.

Also what are the laying cost at the moment for m2 for slate flooring im not planning to do this myself but will be supplying the materials any recommendations for tilers who lay large floor areas also welcome.

You say old clay tiles , can you expand on this plz.?

Ok sorry about the money thing so forget that..

The clay tiles are new 20mm thick designed to go over a timber joisted floor its a german designed UFH system called jupiter these tiles are brick bond layed over the top of the joist then the slate on top of this.

No its not layed yet dave ,its a 20mm part hollow screed replacement tile it in the link below.

I think there would be an expansion issue with those T%G clay tiles... i would un-couple..


As for the slate.. 10mm is quite thin for that size.. is it calibrated..?

Yes they are callibrated and what do you mean by uncoupled.

I saw this interlocking brick system down at a job on Grovsenor Street, some time ago, and it looked very effective, I have one question, when you say the area is 60m2 are you talking about one large area or smaller areas making up this? This is important when considering the need for movement joints. Next question is this, what is the format size of the slate you are planning to install, as 10mm does seem thin, as Dave has already pointed out.

Sorry I stand corrected....durr its been a long day! regarding the tile size, that size is massive for a 10mm slate, it could end up curling...

Yes the space is a complete area lounge kitchen dinner and would be laid in a brick bond ..

How would the tile curl I have seen these tiles laid in airports and such like and it looks very nice but they could have been ceramic.

Porcelain normally gets laid in airports because of the high volume of foot traffic , are you sure these are natural stone slate..?
