After spending a small fortune each year on Anti-virus I've gone and picked up Virtumonde.dll

If anyone else gets it - good luck!

7 hours later and I'm still trying to get rid:mad2:

(and for extra fun, it logs all my key strokes so I'm really limited now as to what I can do)

Wouldn't you just love to meet & murder the (insert appropriate expletives) who create this cack?!

Grace's whats that then? How did you get it? can you explain a bit more about it please... I have spyware bot and norton but the norton is just about to run out I was just wondering if I really need to renew the norton as spyware bot seems to do the same thing. I also have windows defender which was a free download.

Don't know how I got it - think it came via an attachment my wife got from a photographer (nothing dodgy!).

I use Firefox, IE just has gone crazy - pop-ups, browser hijacks etc.
Even with Firefox I can't browse via google, only through bookmarks and links. Computer runs really slow.

I have Panda ******** / Spybot S&D and they've kept me clean until now. Panda misses it completely - Spybot finds and deletes but it keeps coming back. Now waiting on another forum for some techie advice but advised it's going to take ages.

Seriously considering a complete format and clean reinstall, although no-one will say if that will clean it up 100%.

check Wikipedia for details.

In the meantime - don't open ANYTHING without scanning it 1st.
(like my wife didn't:mad2:)

A bit too late to help you, but this software may help others. It's called 'avast' and it's free. Just do a search for it on your browser or just go to avast.com I have been using it for about 18 months and has alerted me to 3 nasties. The company that owns 'avast' make their money by supplying their software to companies. i.e. the companies that want antivirus protection have to pay for it. 'Avast' is provided FREE to individuals like me and you. We just have to register to receive the software licence/key. Updates are received automatically on a near daily basis and its very easy to set up. I hope this may help. Cheers Sean

Annoying. I had a virus two years ago, and it was due to the same thing: A female friend clicked on something she shouldn't have :wallbash:

Other than that, I've been spared major annoyances. I do maintenace once a week.

I use four registry cleaners: Advanced Uninstaller [does registry defrag], regcleaner, crap cleaner, and RegScrubXP. I like covering my bases  I also use Spybot s&d and Diskeeper (like defrag but much much better, faster, and with more options).

About 5-10 minutes of every session requires some input from me, and about 20 minutes runs on it's own. Well worth it.

For day to day protection, I use Avast AV (free anti virus client, really good), Jetico Personal Firewall, Jetico Bestcrypt (erases files securely), and PeerGuardian 2 (blocks bad IP's).

I've got a whole host of tweaking tools too.

Considering the amount of naughty stuff I DL, it's a ****ing miracle I haven't gotten hit by viruses etc

Thanks for the info guys. I am going for a full format and clean install. It seems the only way to get rid of this is with some expert help (freely available) on the "safer networking" forums. Kind as they are, I'm not patient enough to produce reams of logs and manually remove all the code and keys. This virus eats into each system differently which is why no onw piece of software can beat it.

JOY....:furious3:

broken link removed

try this before format mate

andy

Thanks Andy but have you seen the size of the list of Reg keys??!!!!

It's going to be far quicker to format.

I have full back-ups on a clean second hard drive of all my important data (no system files or nasties).
