Thanks for all the offers of help guys, but I braved it last night and did a full format and reinstall.

Now using AVG for antivirus and Comodo for Firewall.

Laptop is running like new now - all clean, updated and secure

Yup it seems good so far and I only have the free version!

This Comodo firewall is good too - recommended by one of the experts on safer networking forum.
