As Sir Ramic says you won't need the tile remover from HSS (they would destroy the tiles) Gently work around each tile with a stiff blade and because of the size of tile try to lift from underneath the tile by this I mean don't put too much pressure on the edge of the tile as it may break. I would think again about getting a tiler in who won't let you down! If you do decide to tackle this yourself again, I wouldn't advise using rapid set adhesive as it won't give you enough time to work with it (a professional would be ok but they will undoubtedly work quicker)

Thanks again for the advice. By "stiff blade", do you mean a knife? chisel? screwdriver?

Also the one we pulled up had some adhesive stuck quite firmly to it - any special tips to remove this please?

I think we'll get the tiles up, clean them and the floor up as well as we can and then try again with a tiler.

If you are going to get a tiler in let them take up the floor as they will have more of an idea where to apply pressure and how much, a stiff scraper like this is ideal (doesn't need the extra handle bit on the blade)

By the way the adhesive you bought is extremely expensive, £16 a tub to cover 2sqm is crazy! You can be assured that the next batch of adhesive won't work out quite as expensive

I agree with Sir Ramic, need to lift them then use a powder based floor adhesive which is cement based. A flexible one if going down onto a wooden floor and if concrete non flexible. Im not a tiler I only sell tioles but I know the tilers at my neck of the woods would use a larger notch trowel than 4mm most would go for an 8mm, this will also allow air to get under the tiles to help the adhesive set quicker.

Hi craig..

If tiling on tile then i would advise a flexible cement based all the time and if the tiles are glazed then an S2 would needed IMHO...

And just to add so you know if future...cement based adhesives dry by chemical reaction ( Hydration) and do not need air to dry..it will start to set as soon as it's mixed with water...and floor tiling requires a solid bed of adhesive so air couldn't get in if it tried..

Just some info for you mate, so you know next time you are asked...

Thanks very much again, and to everyone else for the good advice in the thread and for putting up with my rather dumb questions. Will let you know how we get on.

No problem, If you need any more help come back as often as needed, I don't know many forums where you could get all you questions answered in an hour! it normally takes a day to get even one reply.

As Sir says we have a section for people to post for 'tiler wanted' if you post your location. All tilers should come out and give you a no obligation quote:thumbsup:

You should find they'll come up quite easy.

And I'd use a Mapei product which you'll find much cheaper than BAL. And Mapei are the world's largest manufacture of building materials in the world. You can get it from any www.TileGiant.co.uk store.

People that come into my store looking to tile on tile usually get sent away with Mapei Keraflex Maxi, usually because theyre tiling walls, if you need a rapid set one then Keraquick will do the job.

If you were sold the tubbed gear at a tile shop then I would take it back and raise a bit of a fuss about it, as has been pointed out already tubbed gear wont go off properly with porcelain but also, if it did go off the bond between the tile and adhesive would be virtually non-existant due to the fact that porcelain is a non porpous material and premixed adhesive usually needs to be absorbed into both the substrate and the tile to acheive a bond - something which people who sell tiles for a living really should know.

Best of luck getting this sorted.
