ID speak to him and at least let him know you made a mistake, if he is a mate then he may offer you some money.
As it happens my mum has just had her patio laid, mate did it on a price. He worked it out at 30 slabs and it took 50. He called her and told her after but went about it the wrong way. She did say she would have voluntarily met him half way if he hadnt been so shirty with her.
Personally if it was my job that someone had done for me id help them out but thats probably because im self employed too.
