i explained to my brother that i would need to ply his bathroom floor before tiling etc but he insisted i just went straight onto the nailed down chipboard! after explaining they will probs all be lifting up and grout cracking in no time atall he still wanted me to go ahead, so i did :joker:

quite suprisingly tho its been fine and no problems atall, tho i have left him a bag of grout for when it does fail

thats the last of doing cheap jobs for people, either they have it done properly or not atall, dont want people coming back to me in a couple of years cos somethings gone wrong
This tiling straight onto chipboard is an interesting subject which has been written about may times here in the forums.

There are products available that are designed for the job of tiling straight onto boards, whether ply, floorboards or chipboard. Ardexflex 7001 and Fastflex to name a couple.

The real issue (mostly) is the amount of deflection in the floor. This is the reason why over boarding is recommended - to strengthen the floors. I accept that chipboard is much more susceptible to "blowing" if water gets to it and is in contact for a prolonged period, but perfectly acceptable results can be obtained if the floor is checked out for stability and prepped properly before laying tiles, and appropriate products are used.

Of course it is always preferable to over board chipboard, but sometimes the customer just does not want the extra cost/height difference. When this is the case, perfectly acceptable solutions are available.
