I am a little confused as to why everyone thinks that a 700x250 tile is too heavy for the wall. It doesnt matter how big the tile is it matters how much it weighs per sq metre. If the tile is a standard material (porcelain) and thickness (about 9-10mm) then is weigh the same per sq metre as any other smaller tile and as long as it is solid bed fixed with a suitable adhesive and the substrate is primed then there is no reason for the tiles to fail.

9mm Plywood is not advisable but you can get NoMorePly or Hardibacker board that will do the same job and that starts at 6mm.

No of course they dont all weigh the same but I dont understand why several posters assumed that the tiles were too heavy for the wall when there didn't appear to be any information indicating that they were thicker or made of a denser material than normal. I haven't come across a tile that is under 12mm thick that is too heavy for plasterboard though I am sure someone will now point me to one

The actual weight of a tile is irrelevant. Its how much each square inch/yard/metre weighs because a bigger tile has more surface area and therefore more adhesive holding it up so of course it can weigh more. I fite Kerlite panels which can be upto 3 metres by 1 metre...yes thats right.....huge! However as the material is only 4mm thick it weighs very little and can be fixed to any stable substrate with a regular S1 or S2 adhesive.

There's the problem Terry, none on ethascar's walls were plasterboard, they were a combination of things including skimmed plasterboard and as you will know, that reduces the weight down to 20kg m2, and there aren't many tiles on the market regardless of size that will not exceed that weight limit whether they be porcelain or ceramic.
