Hi
If you have pretty heavy travertine about 1cm thick - fairly big about 25"x25"
would it be good idea to use battons to be on the safe side?

Do you people use battons when it comes to this heavy stuff to stop it sliding down.

I was thinking maybe a batton around the bottom of the wall to support the second row of tiles all around the room would make sense, then later the bottom tile can be cut in and supported by the floor, or am I being over cautious?

I dont think you can be too cautious in any trade mate. I use to work for a joiner, he was the most passionate and skillfull joiner I have met and most things he did he took all precuations available and time was never an issua for him either. This guy has never been short of work and is very well respected do to his standards.

Better safe than sorry, its such percuations that will enable you to do a great job.

alright mate if its a really small floor about 3 -4 sQm there is no need for battons, I use my spirit level for a straight edge all the time.

I would always use a baton to support the tiles ... these sound like they would be heavy .. lol .. measure exactly where you are going to put your 1st tile.. and secure baton ensuring its dead level... make sure you clean off the adhesive from the baton as you go .. you dont want to be chipping it off once its set.. 😉
