Bit of a Dilemma today.

Finishing a job today and the customer told me no one will be at home. Then at around 12.30pm her 16yo daughter comes home from school feeling ill. So that means just me and her in the house. I did not feel happy about this, and phoned the guy i was working for and explained the situation. He sent a chippy out to fit some doors so i was not on my own. What would you do? Or am i over reacting.

I would have just carried on and not given it a second thought. You can't worry about things you have no control over. You could have been accused of something after you had left and only been in the same house for two minutes.... You have to put some faith in the humanity and not think the worst could happen in any given situation.

i would of carried on to, ive been left in customers houses with there kids loads of times, most of them wouldn't be seen dead talking to you, and just lock themselfs in there bedrooms picking there spots...

I think it's pretty admirable you thought of it, Andrew, a sad sign of the times maybe, but to be honest, as a parent I would appreciate this kind of thoughtfulness. If the girl was ill she may have felt really awkward and uncomfortable, having more than one other person in the house there just takes the pressure of everybody. from me.

I would have appreciated the call if I was the parent of the 16 year old. It is also worth mentioning that Local Authority workers are not allowed to work in a property if the persons within are below 16 years of age.

my mate works for lovells (gas servicing in l.a. houses) and he won't go in a house unless there s an adult present. i think it's their company policy

I did not speak to the parents as they were at work. The daughter spoke to her mother who told her to come home as i was working there and would let her in.

To be honest, I'm a bit saddened by the replies to this thread. Am I just being complacent In my everyday life or should I maybe start to worry a bit more and not trust the people around me. Would all you guys do the same thing if it were a sixteen year old guy in the house, or what about an older woman that's maybe having a glass of vino on a sunny afternoon. What is the cut off age for where you start to feel comfortable enough to work in someone's home with a male or female resident present, bearing in mind, it's legal for a sixteen year old to be in the house alone. I'm not having a go at any of your decisions, but what exactly are your concerns.....?? I guess some of you wouldn't let your own daughter in the house with a workman there, but the daughter had already contacted their parents with regards to going home and she also knew that Enduro was there...

Stewarts got a point, but Enduro did the right thing, hes not a family friend or relative, and these days you have to be careful. Three years ago I was alone in the office when an irate tiler came calling claiming he had been underpaid, the upshot was he went to punch me in the face and would have done so if the yardsman hadnt just walked in, to make a cup of tea. Since then the doors have to be locked, sign of the times I guess.

i would't have a problem and as ive said ive done it many times before,the parents ring me to say there at work but there daughter will be there to let me in, im there to do a job of work and nine times out of ten they open the door and i never see them again, and that suits me as i just like to get on with my work.
