Agreed. I wouldnt let him back in the house but make sure you get his full details and make sure you have receipts for all the money you have paid him and any materials you have bought. Why dont you get a pro tiler to come and have a look.

I didn't get any receipts, I just paid him cash when he wanted it. I know, I've been a complete and utter fool. I am going to arrange for a pro tiler to come, hopefully I'll be able to get one out today.

The best thing you can do today is put in writing all the things you are not happy with. Tell him you are withholding final payment on these grounds and he has 14 days to rectify the problems or you will get another contractor to do so, possibly at his expense.

i.e The use of adhesive as a grout is not suitable,
the large dips in the plaster work,
the trowel marks in the plaster work,
the varying sizes of the grout lines,
gorut lines not meeting up,
the tile adhesive on the face of the tiles,
the over tiling of the towel rail foot,
the tiles not going into the door threshold,
the plaster splattered on the door frame.

And that's just from the pictures you uploaded!

You maybe able to find a legal template for this letter on the internet, maybe from citizens advice or trading standards:thumbsup:

Thanks CR for all your help. I'm not sure I'll have time to get a letter sorted before he comes, but I'll certainly give him a list of the problems my untutored eye can see. I really don't understand how he thinks this work is acceptable. He's been pulled up a couple of times now and things still haven't improved. He must just be incapable.

Hi CR, sorry I was away from the computer. Yes, your points are very clear to me, in fact apart from the plastering which isn't all bad, I'd already spotted everything. He'll be here anytime now. Fingers crossed he doesn't get angry. :(

If he gets angry Snowfrog, ask him to leave and only come back if he's prepared to talk in civil manner with you.

Hi GRR, thankfully he took the news as well as he could. I pointed out all the problems and told him that I was going to have to undo lots of his work and get it re done, and that as well as having the cost of a new tiler, I would also be needing more tiles and adhesive. He tried to justify certain things but didn't even sound convinced himself.

He didn't mention money, but if he had, I have been ready with a quick response as I was going to say that by my reckoning he owed me quite a bit. The good news is, as he took everything with him, he's got no need to come back, so now I can get someone who is actually a trained professional to undo his mess and sort things out for me.

Well done! Best decision you have made for ages :) (only kidding!)

Its never nice having to confront someone like that, but now you've done it, best thing is to look forward, and move on. Get a few guys off here to come round and quote you, then you know what sort of money you are looking at. Gives you a figure to save up for at least.

Lets hope this nightmare, turns into a dream bathroom! :hurray:

i have just read this thread, and my blood is boiling!:mad2: it so shameful how some people i wont call them tradesmen(cos theyre NOT) will do this and happily go to the pub and sleep soundly at night on your money!
Snowfrog i hope this matter is getting close to resolution for you? I seem to get alot of calls to rectify this sort of thing and its not easy to tell people that its all coming out, it makes me feel bad and it give the trades a bad rep, personally i think the cowboys should be :83::81::65::88::87:
well you get the idea! best of luck to you and your bathroom!

Hi Marc, thanks for the good wishes. I'm satisfied that I gave him a fair chance to sort the previous problems out, so when he went and created new problems, it eased my guilt somewhat at letting him go without giving him another chance to put things right. Hopefully I'll actually get some sleep tonight, and to that end I'm off to bed soon as I've now been awake about 38 hours straight.

Dave what do I say though? I don't want to sound like some 'bored housewife' who's too picky 'cause she has nothing better to do with her time. What can I say that sounds like I know what I am talking about? I'm sorry for being a nuisance. :(

Your not supposed to know what your talking about, thats supposed to be the job of your skilled tradesman, who should be able to answer all of your queries and explain the how and why.

You are entitled to be picky 'cause YOU are paying.
Further more no-one is a nuisance here, the guys are here to help.
