that raises the question as to wether ivf should be available on the nhs

not being able to concieve is not an illness nor is it life threatening

sometimes theres a medical reason that a women cant concieve and that should be treatable on the nhs but ivf shouldnt be paid for out of the national purse

that's a good point Mike. but with the population already ageing, and most people only having 1-2 children nowadays because of the "cost" the UK economy and population will suffer because there will be less younger generation people coming into the workforce to support the retirees. so maybe is a necessary evil?

Technically I guess you could ask your customers not to smoke in their own houise while you are working there but I would think you would find it difficult to enforce your "rights". I think it would be better to simply not do the job.

When I am talking to a customer and he strikes up a ciggy I will just tell him as I don't smoke I will come back when he's finished. Depends on his or her reaction to this as to whether I actually come back or not.

but if smokers die younger the state wont need so many people to pay for their pensions

alas not every smoker dies young tho. my Grandmother was 91 when she died and she'd been smoking since she was 16. it wasn't even a smoking related illness that killed her in the end. most intriguing. I guess we can't second guess anything in this life. Oh what fun the government must have when trying to figure all these things out.

I used to get wound up over people tutting and pulling faces/arm waving when I went outside for a smoke......and these where usually EX smokers, so they of all people should understand that smoking is an addiction. (as is drinking)

I know there are people who think that is cobblers.........and these quite often are people who have NEVER smoked, but until you have experienced the shakes/withdrawal symptoms, should think again when pulling that face.

I do understand where you are coming from Liz, and I would love to be as fit and Healthy as I used to be........as do most of us, but life styles change and come and go...........and a lot of us get these dirty, unhealthy habits. Smoking was mine.

As for the IVF stuff.......I do sympathise, but that is generally, like a lot of other things, down to the postcode lottery we ALL have to bear.

Please ALL you non/never have smokers............please do not blame everything on the smokers.

From an EX smoker.

Ps....smoke near me, and I'll kick ya shins in ;)

I have very harsh views on smokers, overweight people, and people who generally do not do what they can to keep themselves healthy and expect the government/NHS to sort them out.

I believe people should be left to their own devices, however if they choose to smoke themselves to death, then they should be allowed to die without any medical intervention. I choose to live a healthy life, yet because of budgetary constraints on the NHS, I'd only be allowed one round of IVF on the NHS. And if that was unsuccessful, then tough, no more freebies and I would have to pay for it all myself.

Apologies if I upset anyone with my view, but I believe the system is unfair and penalises those who choose the healthy lifestyle.

Liz you havent upset me with your views as stated above, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs however, I feel you have some double standards displayed in the above statement. You feel it totally unfair for the NHS to fund treatment for anyone who is a smoker or is overweight yet at the same time you feel it is unfair that anyone trying for a baby is only allowed one round of IVF on the NHS. It is all about choice, wanting to concieve is not a fundamental right to access free IVF, so its wrong to treat someone who has an addiction to smoking or over-eating, but its ok because women should be entitled to have free IVF. Sorry but no, you cant have one rule for one set of people with medical conditions and another for couples wanting children. You choose to smoke, you choose to over-eat, and in my book you choose to have children, I also believed couples were entitled to three courses of IVF not one as you stated. If at the end of three courses of this treatment then it goes over to being paid for, which is typically in the range of between £4000-£8000.

I'm an ex smoker too, and nothing gives me more pleasure than passive smoking or wanting to spark up when I'm out socialising. but I gave up for 2 reasons, 1 - my husband asked me to, and 2 - because I wanted to look better than my mum when I get to her age. she smoked until she was 50 and it's taken it's toll on her skin. i don't want wrinkles, creases or horrible looking skin/teeth. fairly selfish reasons but that's how i experienced the smoking life.
