day rate

When you guys quote a day rate of say £150 would this be regardless of hours worked or would you adjust accordingly?

I base my day rate round an 8hr day, but tiling isn't the sort of job where you can just pack up and go after 8 hours. It may need less hours or more hours, depending on what exactly you are doing.

If you feel that you will be doing longer days from the offset just increase your day rate

dont forget that your day rate has to reflect your speed at which you can tile v what you could potentially earn for the same hours on a bigger job. the price you quoted is about what they charge in my part of the country but this can vary massively

what if you complete job in say 4 hours on second day of day rate of £150 for instance would you charge full days rate or adjust to £75 for half a day? Thankyou for the replies.

I never split my price up in2 half days unless you have anything else you can get on with afterwards

I look at a job and estimate the number of days work in my head. Multiply that number by my day rate and then add estimated material costs. The total amount is what what I tell the customer. If my customer wants to know how long the job will take I give them an estimated number of days and explain that my price includes all materials etc., but the number of days can only be approximate as you never know what issues you may encounter.

I reassure the customer that the job will take as long as it takes and if it takes a day longer then the customer still wont be out of pocket. If I finish the job early, I may knock a few quid off but my view is that the customer was quoted a price and not a day rate, so they should be happy to pay what I quoted regardless of how long the job takes !

Yip i agree if you quote a day rate weather you finish early or over run by a day the quote is what the customer will pay.

The customer won't know you have finished early

Never split the day rate...unless I can use the afternoon on another job where I can split the cost...otherwise it is lost time and therefore money. Get paid for going home and doing your admin / getting new business in!

Don't split up day rates in half, just as I never charge extra if a job runs over a day if it's not the customers fault.

I use a day rate £150, Half day rate £80, Hourly rate £20. I try to price a job as close to the time as I can. If i know i have an hour of prep work to do before I can tile on a job that shoulld take a day then I charge £170. Some guy's may just go in and write off that hour and charge £150 though.
