Just wondering what you other guys charge yourself as a typical day rate.

Im new to tiling (6 months or so) ive got my speed right up and i also work part time and also im not reistered untill after xmas so i dont have to worry to much about tax (as yet)

I try and earn £70 - £80 a day but when im self employed and working full time asa tiler i will be working between £100 - £120 a day

Does this seem the going rate ?

Ive got a little poll goin on it would be interesting to what other people on here earn and want to earn

Tysfoot how are mate hope everything ok  i have found some people are better value at £200 a day than some that charge £50 a day it depends on what you can achieve have some guys that can lay 35 mtrs a day on a solid bed and that couldn't lay 5 mtrs a day

i should have gone higher than £130 for the poll, if anyone can edit it, just correct it accordinly

Hi tysfoot

I've not started trading as a tiler yet,but plan to in the new year. So i'm interested to hear what peoples thoughts on day rates are generally.
I was speaking to the boss of the contracting firm i work for today about how much i should be looking at charging for a day rate and he suggested that i should be aiming at between £125 - £140 to start with.He also said that alot of tilers will charge around the £180 a day mark:speechless:

thats more money than i expected, like you am new to this game and i need to sort my pricing out. quoted a splashback and atwo walls of a bathroom for my first job 3 months ago, quoted £230. rang me up last week to see if i could do it totally out of the blue but as im more experienced the rate i gave was way to low but as its xmas and i need the dough i done it. its took me 3 full days to complete. now i would nearly double that.

Its all experience including pricing up the job so if you do a few cheap ones like i have just put it down to experience.

Im finding pricing kitchen splashbacks very hard to price, any suggestions on splashback pricing tips would be very helpfull ?

Bathrooms are easiler as i just charge between £20 - £25 ms which is right, isnt it ?

try somthing like this 50 turning up fee 20 for half window 10 for each socket + 25 mtr so 4 mts + 6 plugs 1 i/2 window = 230 used to work somthing like that on kitchens Regards Pete

i used to work on £20 - £25 m2 plus mats, but people didn't want to pay it, so wot i did i rang a few tilers with made up area's & asked how much they charged a m2, they all varied between £15-£25m2,plus mats!
when i did my course they told us to work on £120 - £150 day rate or 20-25 m2. till we get better established then the rates goes up!:huh2:

thats good advice pjc. worked out your quote system and for the kitchen that i dont i should have charged £215 so on this job i finished ive underchared by bout £150. s**t happens

It's always tricky pricing up when you are new, as when your new, your basically slower at working, so you generally price up the first job you get to quote on, think it'll take you a day and a half for the splashback, quote £225 for your day and a half, then jop ends up taking 3 days,

You come away with mixed feeling, pleased that you have your first job under your belt, but a bit miffed cos you only got £75 per long day.

It happens to a lot of people, but once the speed comes up, you end up doing it in a long day, maybe a morning too, making it very worth while.

General rule of thumb, you'll end up doing the first few jobs for not too much money with the time it takes you, then the speed comes and you knock off 2 days or so from what it takes to do a whole bathroom and you end up with good money.

Just stick in there, and get the first few out of the way without bothering too much about the money.

I started at 80-100 per day(knowing i was slower and trying to get a name)
Now i aim for 150. Sometimes I make it sometimes I dont and like you its usually splashbacks i dont make it.
I like the formulae above but i quite often get asked to do bespoke patterns in the cooker hood splashback. Add £100 for them!!

Either get the m2 on a large job, very nice, or its £150 per day, that leaves you with around £105 after tax and NI.

i find myself weighing up the customer and getting a feel for what sort of budget they will be on and adjust my price accordingly, especially if i could do with the job (better to have a few quid than none at all).I have questioned customers after the job and i seem to be hitting the mark.
But ultimately it is a combination of factors!

ive started puttin 25% away for every job i do for tax and NI. then when i et my first tax bill it wont be a shock. Is that what you other guys do

Absolutely spot on mate, and thats exactly how I price most kitchen splashbacks, 1 1/2 Day rates.

what is the amount of tax for self employed and how much is ni
The amount of tax for self employed is exactly the same as if you were employed, same rates and same thresholds. What does differ slightly is that being self employed you must pay Class 2 NI which is currently £2.20 per week and class 4 contributions on any profit in excess of the single persons tax threshold, currently £5225 per year. The NI on any balance over this is charged at 8%. i.e if you had "taxable profit" of £10,000 you would pay 8% of £4775 (10,000- 5225 = 4775) = £382.

Grumpy

when i started out i charged £120. - £150. per day. i now charge £150. - £180 & at times more. keep the prices up its best for all.. i need the beer vouchers.

calvy...

I agree with the above. You need to charge well for your time once you're up to speed. Aim high.

I was in a chippie the other day, only 10 mins away from where I live.

It's a nice quiet rather posh village, very expensive area to live, mid terrace house £180,000, well their called cottages round there because they would turn their nose up at the dirty word "terrace".

Anyway, in this chipp shop, they have a large notice board up for people to pin their cards too, and after I had pinned my card I had a good look at all the other business cards, and there was only one other tiler on there.

Name.. blah blah

Time served tiler, prices from £15 per sqm, any genuine quote beaten, with only a mobile number on it.

Now for that price I doubt they lived anywhere around there.

I aim for 150 a day, well not aim I charge 150 a day minimum unless special circumstances e.g I think they have more work for me or will be a good advert.

Last week was a good one, I worked 5 full long days and 2 halves and after all expenses, tax, fuel e.t.c I earned 1175. woo hoo! lol

Tys,
I find this all confusing.
I am in contact with a contractor working on a large grade 2 listed building in central London who is looking for a tiler to take on the jobs that residents are pushing his way. So far there is 4 bathrooms and 3 kitchens to price and they want them priced seperatly.
The father in this company was saying that i should be pricing at the m2 depending on the tile to be used, however, whilst talking to the son, he asked what i need to earn and i said no less than £100 per day, his reply was, nobody goes to work to earn a minimum living, your in it to make a profit, and bumped it straight up to £150-£160 per day (Bloody great). This tells me that they were probably thinking that the tiler would be going in at about the £180-£200 per day mark. These guys are very keen for me to get down there and start putting prices in and making a start, but my nerves are starting to go.
To me it seems that you have to find a respectable in-between, Your in it to make money as much as them.
