Hi,

Last nght went round a potential customers house to give an estimate. He has a shower room 16.5 m2 walls and a 4 m2 floor. He is having 300x300mm Porcelain tiles on walls and in the attached pic he is having on the floor, they are also porcelain, and he wants them layed in a diamond fashion.Fair play, he has lowered the floor and layed down 12mm ply as to compensate for any step ups,so its dead level as you walk in.Also he is putting aquapanels around the shower area, and most of the walls are plasterboard.Talk about precise,he gave me all the measurements even before I started to measure,he then said take off 1.5m2 for the door and a metre for the window. He said 'the thing is im very fussy, everything has to be right, all the levels, no jagged cuts etc, nothing protruding' fair enough I thought,he then said if I dont like it you wont get paid.
Hmm I thought, one of them blokes is he?
Anyway I came away from the job, thinking I would like to tackle it ,as it would be a learning curve too..but ill overprice it,as Im not sure if he'd be a nightmare.
I priced it at a grand , as its natural stone and theres quite a few holes to drill and cause he's a fussy xxxxxx. He says he's getting all the mats,he just want a price to lay it...
Sorry its long winded, just would like to know your views on my price.
Cheers,
Vinnie.

As soon as clients talk like that I walk. The very suggestion he states he would not pay if he is not happy is enough for me to walk. Been there, court etc, never again.

I would be inclined to walk away too. Certainly won't use materials he has supplied unless I approved. You will be sure that he will find something wrong that will give him any excuse not to pay. Be cautious.

nearly £50 a meter? yeah worth a punt. just do a decent job, straight edge across the tiles to make sure theres no lipping, file any cut edges and he'll have nowt to complain about. its not cost you anything except time so if he pays up all well and good for you. If not, come back in the night and tile his car

Cheers Fred,
I rang him first, left a message saying the estimate price, aint heard nothing yet. Will have to wait and see. I realise you have to be warry who your dealing with at times, cause I could certainly do without the aggro.
Cheers,
Vinnie.

The easiest thing is to find fault with anyones work even just a tiny part of grouting I'd walk because he will find somethink and he will be surveying the job when you leave at night and a lovely note for you in the morning

I had a guy like that. Did 17 m2 wall tiling and 4m2 wall tiling for him. Was one of my first jobs I ever did. He said same to me that he would take me to court if I didnt do a good job. I was bricking it!! Did the job and although it looked good, he picked holes in it almost every day. Tiny bits of lipping (And I mean tiny!!) Had me taking a single tile off in middle of a wall just done because it lipped by about 1mm!! When I had finished the job (or thought I had) he gave me a snagging list that was as long as my arm!! Took me another day to do the snagging. In all, it took me 12 man days before he was happy with the final result and only then did he pay me. The biggest problem I had was due to the dodgy plumber friend of his who fitted the shower tray. The walls werent square and it left big gaps around the tray going into the corners. It should have been bedded into the wall as it was 20mm out from the wall in the corners and had to try and make it look decent. Big lesson learned on that job!! Wouldnt mind but I only quoted him £400 plus materials for the lot. Think I earned about £35 quid per day by the end of it!! - Lol

He also gave me an extra £100 on top of the job cos I had done a good job and it took me a bit longer than I thought it would!!!
