Delayed ettringite Failure can happen to glass mosaic tiles in swimming pools ?, i know most of you will associate it with gypsum /cement reaction but i was wondering if the conditions found in swimming pools my cause this ?

Don't beleive so. There are reactions that can go on Between portlandite and glass bt these tend only to happen at high temperatures.

Ettringite is hydrated calcium sulphoaluminate so is pretty specific I.e. gypsum, moisture and cement. I guess thre is some possibility of a alkali silica reaction with porous silicate glass if it contains reactive silicates.....

Is it the glass itself that is failing or is it the backing?

Alan they are glass mosaic tiles about 4-5 years old just randomly pinging off , i know they have emptied the pool on at least two occasions for over i month at a time exposed to all sorts of weather,

sounds like compresive exspasion

Could be to do with drying whilst empty. Or even more likely if it has been exposed to freeze thaw this can have a dramatic effect on the adhesive to glass interface.

It is possible that there is alkali silica reaction going on between the glass and the adhesive but again I would think this unlikely.

There is another much less common sulphate attack that occurs in cement called thaumesite. Can't remember what the conditions are for this to occur but beleive it has to be mobile water such as would be found in ground conditions where there is a variable water table. This is pretty rare though.

Thanks guys ! the problem is there could be loads of reasons ether individually , or a few at the same time as each other going on, like multiple organ failure if you like,

when you fill a pool it takes on tons in weight when you drain it loose this if you drain to quickly after filling some parts will exspand faster than others causing over to compress with the fast exspansion of other this causis stress at the weakest point ping ping ping

OH its an outdoor pool as well, exposing it to all the whether we have HOT/COLD, a swimming pool such a demanding place to have a tile cladding !!!!....lol but i love them
