ha ha ha now i am totaly lost, but there is one thing for sure the title on this thread about sums things up ,merry christmas and ill remember who not to ask to measure any of my jobs or even let em in the house in the first place ,im out also:thumbsdown:

Well Brian seeing as you seem to be god all mighty in the tiling world & you still haven't answered my question,
You measure a bathroom at 20m2 bang on with your tape or whatever other measuring device you use,
How many m2 do you tell the client to get????

Amtek, reading back on what you posted I thought you only charged for half a tile?
I see reading back what your saying, but some on here can't grasp the concept of 10% wastage.

I very rarely charge a meterage rate, normally just a price for how long I think that particular job will take me and an estimate for materials separately stating that materials are on estimate only and could cost more. And just to put the cat among the pigeons I normally ask for 15% extra tiles especially large format but tell them that there will probably be tiles to take back.

If I do have to give a meterage rate I will still estimate how long the job will take and divide that by how many m2 of fixed tiles there will be. I'm not losing out by not accounting for the cuts etc because the m2 rate was worked out from my day rate for that particular job. That way works for me but each to his own

On large formats you have to get up to 15% or 20% as you will be working on a lot more wastage.
I don't do a lot of privates now but the company I work for do Bespoke homes so in essence it's like a private job for me with working direct with the client.
I think we got lost a long the way early on in this thread about how people go about measuring up a job.
At least you get the fact you must account for wastage on jobs or your going to be short.
I'm not into arguing on this forum, especially not in the Arms about things like this..

Stef would i be right in thinking that you dont work for yourself,if thats the case i can see why you have a extra long tape measure,i am not the lord almighty of the tiling world and have never said that i am , wht i do have is a lot of experience and a bloody good tape,i dont need to reply to you posts but i will on this occation, and then you need to look back at my posts for your own sake,if a job measures 20 mts ,that is what i tell the customer to get ,i also tell them to get extra in case of breakages, i then charge for 20 mts not 22 is that plain enough for you as i am here banging my heed against the bloody wall

Don't know why any accusations of ripping people off are being thrown around?? If I decided to charge my customer for 50% waste because (for arguments sake) I'm really crap at cutting and they ((**agree a price**))then would I be ripping them off?... NO! Would only be ripping off if an ((**M2**)) rate had been agreed prior to work then the ((**chargeable M2**)) was in dispute after work was done.

Some people charge £10 per m2 and some £50 but as long as the price is agreed before the job then their is no foul play!!

Personally i I price my work for m2 installed so I don't charge for waste but that's really not the intended point of this thread.

SMG Tiling Services.
That's my own company, been running approx 7/8 years now.
Majority of my work was in house bashing then we jumped between private sector (domestic) & house bashing through various well know house builders.
I'm subbied to an exclusive House builder down here in Ayrshire. We do work for prince Charles, google Knockroon Ayrshire, so there's your answer to your 1st surmise.

If you are measuring a bathroom at 20m2 & you are charging 20m2 then you need to have a look at your tiling practises as you are short changing yourself.
As I've been trying to say all along in this thread it's about simple arithmetic & "wastage" not "breakage".
There is a very very big difference between the 2,
When I tile I charge a m2 rate for tiling & I try to keep cuts to a minimum, ie above a half tile but this isn't always possible.
I live & work in one of the most socially deprived areas in Britain & one thing for sure is I don't rip people off by charging extra on a m2 job.
Again I will try & put this into laymans terms,
I measure a job at 20m2, I ask client to get 22m2,
I lift & cut a tile & fit it, I charge for the whole tile as its taken me longer to fit that tile than one I wouldn't need to cut!! Simple!!
