Gone Deaf in my right ear

hi all
just got back in from A & E
while watching the rugby tonight the phone rang which was on my right hand side and i could barely hear it.

decided after the rugby was finished to nip to A & E, got checked out and it seems that my Right ear has suffered nerve damage and is scarred inside the ear drum, basically my ear has been slowly packing up for a couple of years without me knowing it and it decided tonight was the night to pack in.

Have to go back on wednesday to see the Ear Nose and Throat specialist to see if the can repair the damage and save my hearing or not.

Not what you need at 42.

I know my hearing ain't what it used to be in my right side.. maybe i should wear ear protection at work.. never do

I always have worn ear protection dave, I will keep you posted as to the outcome, but its not the worst thing in the world and is something that i am sure i can get used to, and im certainly not too vain to not wear a hearing aid.......well when im in the house atleast.

Chris, that's a bad one. I hope the ear doc can do something for you.

My Dad was evaluated at only 10% hearing in his right ear and 30% in his left when he retired from the Army. My hearing is so-so, but the damn tinnitus is driving me nuts at times.:mad2:

Sorry to hear that CJ. I have some hearing damage from work I did as a teenager and also have tinnitus which is annoying though not exactly a hold back. I hope they get you sorted out.

We all take safety gear far too lightly. Some of us have kids that maybe following on in the trade. Maybe we should all show more responsibilty

Wow... that must have been a bit strange and scary, not what you expect while watching rugby! Anyhow, good luck with it all, let us know how you get on and if they have any tips how to avoid that sort of thing...my dad was deaf on one side, too, all of a sudden, don't know what happened there...

thank you all for the replys i will keep you posted how i get on.

while i was at the hospital and talking to the doctor she said that the biggest cause for ear damage and infection though not necessarily deafness
are those q tip's that we all use and she wishes that they would stop selling them. 9/10 times the plastic tube part will scrape across the lining of your ear while you are using it but the ear itself is so delicate inside that it cause damage without us knowing it. As to my hearing, she did say that the damage may have been done years ago and has just got worse up until it suddenly stopped working.

sadly there is no way of knowing that you may have damaged the ear if there is no pain unless you have regular checks done on your ears.....but in all honesty who amongst us has their ears checked unless we have a problem, it is certainly not something i thought about before.

I used to be told the smallest thing you should be sticking in your ear is your elbow and thats never going to fit...
