I was due to start a 3-4 week job tomorrow - 105sqm of limestone.

Only now (today) do I find out that he has not actually got the stone.
Very apologetic - "job still on - want you to do it - just paid a massive tax bill - etc etc etc" I trusted this one!

I am seriously thinking of trying to invoke the clause in our "contract/signed quote" for lost work. Hopefully I can pull a few jobs forward - we'll see.

In the meantime - if anyone needs a pair of decent hands in the next couple of weeks, within say 50miles of Preston - please give me a shout!

If you invoke your 7 day clause..what will you get back..or hope to..?

Exactly! I might get a few hundred quid, begrudgingly and a reputation-spoiling bad-mouthing with it. Or I can struggle along and hopefully get the work in a few weeks along with full payment.

Bit of a no-brainer when you think about it really.
Guess I should have insisted on a deposit with this one.
In future all large jobs will need a deposit.

You live and learn....

...and learn!

Hate when it happens.........but as you know it happens..........and it will again most likely.

Pain in the ar5e, but wot do you do?

As long as he does come back to you?

Maybe you should ring him and have a word to the likes of "If it happens again...you will have to charge" :dizzy2: May make him wonder..........:veryangry:doubt it

That's a tough one, GD....I feel your pain. I have a clause in my contract that is supposed to protect my interests in a situation like this, but I have never used it because of the thought that I will "win the battle but lose the war".

The thing that really kills me is when the customer finally calls you to do the work, and can't understand that you are unable to start their work at the drop of a hat because other jobs were started to fill in the gaps in the schedule.

Dont get your hopes up too much but I may need a bit of help this week - will know more by the end of Tuesday, was supposed to start a bathroom 30x60 porc job today but plumbers are in - this may mean a rush to get to next weeks job. It's in Standish, Wigan. Can i have your mobile in case anything comes of it, pm if you like.

GD, didn't mean to sound unsympathetic earlier.

What I was trying to say was that often there is little you can do to help yourself in a situation but you can be the good guy in the situation. If the gent is as sorry as he says he is this will go a long way towards recommendations etc.

All the best, and I hope it works out.

Panic over!

I spent the day taking my new swish and fancy brochures (made 'em myself!) round the retailers which seems to have gone down very well.

I also called round recent and old quotes and managed to land a full bathroom rip-out and re-tile along with a large kitchen floor straight afterwards.
Another customer wants her entire ground floor tiling in terracotta, and I picked up a few days worth of odds-n-ends too.

So I should be ok now for the next 2 weeks at least. I reckon I can also pull a couple of larger jobs forward if I give them a little incentive.

Feeling better tonight now - enjoying a beer now!

Thanks for the support guys :hurray:
