Right boys and girls,

I'm nervous, extremely nervous, about buying a second hand car. My lease car goes back in April and I have about 8 weeks to make a decision about what to buy AND buy it :yikes:

Does anybody on here have any tips for buying second hand? What to look for? How to know when I'm being spun a line?

I got done over by a garage in Derby when I last bought a car and don't really trust any dealer anymore.

Plus I'm also struggling to find dealers locally who have cars in that I am interested in.

cheers people
Liz

AA Vehicle Inspection

Be sure – get an AA Vehicle Inspection

Buying a car is a major investment – one that you want to protect. And you'll also want to be sure that the vehicle you and your family are driving around in is safe.
An AA Vehicle Inspection will give you peace of mind, and help you to protect your investment.
Benefits of an AA Vehicle Inspection

  • Get a full vehicle safety check and road test before you buy.
  • Benefit from an independent, professional 'second opinion'.
  • Use the vehicle inspection results when negotiating over price.
Book your inspection online – get a no-obligation quote.

Why get an AA Vehicle Inspection?

Every year 600,000 cars are written off by insurers. Yet many of them still end up on a forecourt or in the small ads.
  • The new MOT Certificate is no guarantee of roadworthiness – would you know what has happened to the car since the test took place?
  • Millions of cars are generally unroadworthy, have major defects or other damage.
  • Appointments are usually available within 3 working days.
  • Full report is sent by email, plus verbal report.
  • Road test included in all inspections.
  • Cars, vans, 4-wheel-drive vehicles and motorhomes can all be inspected, please see the price list for details.
  • Tell us where the vehicle is, and we will arrange the inspection appointment with the vendor.
  • The results of the checks can be used to insist that the seller repairs any defects or may lead to compromise on the purchase price.
Choose from our inspection options

Prices depend on engine size and type of vehicle.
Comprehensive pre-purchase inspection

  • full inspection of the vehicle's body, paintwork, interior, visible mechanical and electrical components and equipment
  • includes a 10-mile road test, multi-page written report and verbal report
This comprehensive inspection is available for vehicles up to 15 years old.
Basic inspection

  • inspection and checks on mechanical and vehicle operations, and previous accident damage
  • full vehicle safety check and road test, verbal report and multi-page written report
A basic inspection is not available for vehicles over eight years old, four-wheel-drive vehicles or any vehicle on a total-loss register.
Special inspections

Special inspections are also available for vans under 3500kg and motorhomes. See price list

Your budgets gone already on the disco, especially after the winter we've just had and the prices going up. With the budget you have you'll just about get a decent 02-03 disco.
Once you start paying less than that your guaranteed to be getting some work done on it.

yeah I hear what you're saying Stewart. I've been looking at disco's since last April and I've watched the prices going up. I'm trying to hold out buying until April if I can, and if necessary, hold off buying a disco until the summer. It just means I'll have to buy the family sized hatchback car first (as Mr GRR's lease car doesn't go back until September) and then swap the cars over.

Do you need a 4x4 GR or is it just a 'would like' type thing, the prices are up after all the snow problems and feul is through the roof at the moment, I saw a guy at the petrol station the other week go past £100 in diesel in a 4x4 as I walked past to go in to pay, and he was still going :yikes::yikes:

Bear in mind that it was around april 2006 when the new tax bands came in and tax for uneconomical vehilces went through the roof as well, I used this to my advantage when we got the RX8, we purposley looked for one registered before april 06 becuase the road tax was half the price!
