HELP ceramic wall tiling on ply HELP PVA???

Could you not just go over the pva with acrylic primer??? Don't know if it would work but I can't see why not.

hi dave.hope you can clear something up for me.i always use a primer BUT the 1 iv been using last year or so is from discount tiles and fairly cheap.it has had a shiny cling filmy look to it and i thought it just that make but just reading another thread(which month has run out and cant reply)it states that it isnt a primer if got a rubbery film.can you please enlighten me as if it isnt a tilers primer,as what they state,i wont be using agen and my friend wont be happy.done hers a few mnths ago-tiles still up tho(hopefully forever)and they cost her a lot of money as its 30m2

Usually if the primer has dried with a rubbery finish then you have not mixed it to the correct ratio..usually 4:1..4 parts water to one part primer.....it should state on the bottle the mixing ratio for certain substrates.....basicly if it is an impregnating sealer and not one that coats the surface( like PVA) then it will be OK...but as i said it will probably just need more water.....you also might want to go onto the primers manufactures website and see if there is a pdf or summit with more info on it and more detail on its uses........

Agree with above. I`m new to this and one of the first things i learnt on here......STAY AWAY FROM PVA!!! (My god, i`m a poet and didn`t even know it!!)

Spot on Joe, Bal do not recommend PVA at all, as soon as moisture hits it it becomes live or active again and gives no barrier at all....these are the primers to use and check the spec on which applications suits you.....Gaz
BAL Prime APD

A modified acrylic polymer dispersion for use as a primer for a variety of backgrounds/bases prior to fixing ceramic tiles, mosaics and natural stone and prior to the application of levelling compound and the BAL WP1 TANKING SYSTEM. BAL PRIME APD isolates products containing calcium sulphate such as gypsum plaster and anhydrite screeds from cement-based adhesives, thus minimising the risk of reaction between the two materials.

Also suitable for use on cement:sand rendering, blockwork, plasterboard, cement:sand screeds and timber. It also provides surface strength to friable surfaces and reduces the porosity of porous backgrounds/bases, thus preventing the formation of air bubbles and prolonging the flow time with levelling compounds and extending the open time of tile adhesives. BAL Bond SBR

A waterbased polymer with a wide variety of uses in the construction industry, particularly as an admixture and bonding agent for cement and concrete applications. Once cured, the polymer is water and frost resistant. Welcome to the forums baltas1, thanks for your input, the SBR is indeed styrene-butadiene copolymer, and has many uses within construction not only as a primer, but also as admixture and bonding agent.
Bal APD on the other hand is a modified acrylic polymer dispersion type which isolates products containing calcium sulphate like gypsum plaster, and cement based adhesives from reacting with one another.....Gaz

i always use acrylic primer on all surfaces granfix to be exact,use this neat on all wood surfaces ply etc then diluted 3 to 1 on all other surfaces screed and plasterboard etc

I got in touch with BAL and they said sand, wash and roughen the ply and all will be fine for tiling over...
