Help, what could be wrong with my porcelain tiled floor that is liftin

Re: Help, what could be wrong with my porcelain tiled floor that is li

Tiles that size, especially porcelain, should be back buttered and the adhesive bed combed on the floor should not need extra blobs to get a level finish. 100% coverage is needed and pic 2 shows about 40% contact that has come clean away due to no back buttering.

The above is the conclusion I would come to personally.

From the chunks of adhesive we removed the adhesive is approx 130mm and the adhesive/SLC beneath that 30mm, so 160mm in total.

It might just be my eyesight but it doesn't look like the tile has touched any of the adhesive other than the 2 big blobs!
Sorry to say this but IMO if Granfix sees that pic they will wash there hands of it as the correct fixing procedures haven't been followed....

I'm confused, the chunks of addy are you saying 130mm deep ????

Re: Help, what could be wrong with my porcelain tiled floor that is li

I think they mean diameter. But they look a good 20-25mm deep. Tinkering on borderline depth limit. I'd say they lack of contact created hotspots that have de-bonded the tiles. I'm wondering though, how soon after slc went down was it tiled on?

Re: Help, what could be wrong with my porcelain tiled floor that is li

No it's not your eyesight, those 2 blobs were the only contact point, so conclusion being fixing method to blame I assume? Does the colour of the adhesive going a funny orange suggest something else is wrong in addition to a poor fixing method?

Is it likely that you could just remove the tiles and adhesive and just relay the floor, leaving the UFH "untouched" or would you suggest that the UFH & possibly the tile backer board are replaced too?

Re: Help, what could be wrong with my porcelain tiled floor that is li

Sorry, I have a real problem with measurements tonight, should read 13mm/1.3cm for adhesive, 3mm/0.3cm for whatever got put over the UFH, so 16mm/1.6cm deep layer of adhesive in total. No idea of diameter, the tile has been relaid as a temporary measure so can no longer check.

SLC/adhesive (sorry don't know which was applied over the mat, have asked the builder but no surprises that he has yet to come back to me on that one) was applied over the UFH heating mat late afternoon, tilers arrived the following morning and completed the entire floor (including grouting) that day.

Re: Help, what could be wrong with my porcelain tiled floor that is li

Well the fixing leaves a lot to be desired, but i would also say that the floor was laid too soon after the SLC went down. Certinly if it was laid at approx 30mm. I would of left it for a couple of days before tiling not the next morning.
