I need advise.. please...

Guys I'm also a newbee and the forum is currently giving me a headache :mad2: .

Everytime I try to access a section of the forum, it asks me to log in again, and then the links in the welcome section don't work!

This appeared to be my only option to get to ask a question.

Now, I'm not a professional, and so far I have only tiled the kitchen (concrete) floor, so my experience is (extremely) limited.

We have lifted the carpet in the bathroom, and are going to tile. The measurements are 4.0m X 2.4m, and the surface is 15mm T&G plywood sheets. These are screwed down to the joists at (roughly) 200mm centres.

My wife has chosen 450mm X 450mm tiles.
I was hoping for advice on the adhesive, and on where to start the tiles (centre line?).

Hi Xenon

For setting out i'd measure the room width and length (as you already have) And mark the centre line both ways. Then using your tile mesurement plus whatever width spacer your using you can start to mark out from these centre points to see where your tiles will end up against your walls.
The trick is to set the tiles out so that your not left with any little slithers of tiles against either of the walls if it can be helped.Try putting the tiles centre of the line and see how that works out if it leaves you with little cuts then try the tiles edge on the centre line and run them out to the wall like this. usually one of these methods will work out fine. You'll want to check the squareness of your walls too.
For tiling onto timber you will want a flexable tile adhesive for timber there are lots to choose from. One type we use is called "gold star" and is made by Sovereign its a waterproof timber adhesive.

Big tiles like that on a timber floor, you will really need to board out first unless you are sure the floor has no movement.

Assuming it has no movement you could get away with using something like Ardex 7001 or BAL Fastflex but they are quick setting so you would need to work pretty fast (and cleanly if you use Fastflex!). these adhesives are designed to go straight onto timber floors and absorb a small amount of movement.

If you are not going to board out, I would seriously consider using a smaller tile as you will reduce the potential to crack slightly if the floor does move!

You will also need to use a flexible grout such as Ardex-flex FL or FS, or BAL Superfex floor grout, or other makes equivelants.

Reducing the tile size would not compensate for any movement in the floor mate, my advice would be to board out with minimum of 12mm exterior ply (18mm preferably) or 10mm backerboard. Happy tiling mate

I know smaller tiles wouldn't compensate for movement int he floor Varley, just that smaller tiles MAY reduce the possibility of tile damage as there would be more flexy stuff around with smaller tiles than big ones. Wasn't saying this would definately work, was just a thought.

i come accros these t&g boards quite often they are very stable as long as you are sure they are not chipboard ? you should be able to use fastflex or 6mm tile board put down with adhesive in a small area after screwing the board to the joists Pete
