I was asked to quote a floor today....

28sqm (Topps) polished porcelain 60 x60 onto a sand cement wet UFH screed. The room is pretty much rectangular with just a few wet cuts required. The tiles are light coloured and I have always used white addy when fixing these in the past. Obviously, these also need to be sealed.

I gave my quote and the prospect advised that he has had 2 other prices - mine was by far the most expensive!

I am happy to post the pricing, but would prefer to hear what you guys reckon the price should be first, please.

Oh and by the way, as a footnote, the screed was supposed to be tiled this week even though the screed has only been down 2 weeks :lol::lol:.

Unfortunately Captain rates go out the window these days!
It seems that larger areas are expected to be considerably cheaper these days and its more like can you make it pay than can you get your rate.
I've got a 3 day job down your way this week at a competitive rate to link to other work.
Never like to quote figures as too many factors to consider but you have to get a decent day rate for 3 days.

i would want £32 a m2 inc addy and grout, but around my way would be lucky to get £22

If the floor is just to be primed And tiled, then £35 per metre plus materials...

I would probably be around the £30-£35 per M mark. I know at least 3 people that would do that for under £20 per M though.

if the floor was flat enough to tile to I would charge around £800 - £900 (I tend to base work on a day rate plus mark up on materials supplied)

this includes labour, addy, grout, sealer and cleaning/ sealing of floor.

If the floor needs some work prior to tiling then you are probably looking at a day rate plus materials to straightening that out first.

Thanks everyone, you've all pretty much confirmed my thoughts .

I quoted £35 per sqm to include adhesive, grout & sealer but rounded down to a grand as the room is straight forward. The client has a price of £850 and one that is even cheaper :yikes:.

My pricing is not always cheapest but I think always fair.

Wet ufh, fresh screed, Mmmmmm, price depends on a few factors mate, ie, IF you were to fix prior to commissioning of ufh will you be using an un-coupling membrane, green screed addy etc, give us a clue lol

EDIT: must type faster, so are you going to fix mat down ? The reason I ask is, we had a failure at the begining of the year, a new build house in Clapham, basement kitchen floor, about 80 m2, no mention of wet ufh when we did the job, you guessed it, heating went on and tiles started popping.

I wont be putting a mat down Al, but I wont be doing the job any time soon either. I've told him that the UFH has to be properly commissioned, I also suggested that after commissioning he sets it to ambient to assist the screed to dry.

I used to work with a tiler who when asked if he could cut his price he would say " Okay, can you just show me which part of the job you would like me to cut corners on and which materials you would like me to leave out" ,the puzzled customer would just look at him and and realise that the job wasnt all about price and he would invariably get the work

I know I'll get the job as I've proved my knowledge and can prove my quality. I'm just letting the client sweat for a couple of days before refusing to drop my price.
