Well if the customer was getting all materials etc, I'd tell them what was needed and charge £360 wall tiling and £60 flooring "if it was a local job, so £420 for the whole job.

You must be a mind reader fekin, rang him a hour ago told him 320 (its 19 sq.mtr but 21 with allowance)for wall tiling and 100 for floor tiling so 420...he said he's very interested in price and will let me know tomorrow once confirmed with wife...so fingers crossed..He asked me how long will it take i said "roughly a week give or take a day" Is this right??Monty

Hi Monty,

I priced my first few jobs quite cheap, and regretted it!
I now recognise how "fast" (slow) I tile and price jobs according to how long it will take me - some I win and some I lose, but at least I am happy with the money I earn on each job now.

If you give your customer the confidence that you know what is required to deliver a quality result they will often pay more than you expect. I've had many instances where my customer has said that they selected me because I gave them the most confidence in my ability and knowledge (not price).

I can't comment on price 'cos I'm not in your area but I normally charge a weeks work at £750 + materials.

Keep smiling!

Daz

Paul who is my tiler just charges a flat rate of £25 per square meter.

He recons that its just easier to do that and he is always busy.

His only problem now is that his knees are shot due to not wearing knee supports and so he can only do the odd tile job.

He did my bathroom @ 37 square meters in two days and was out of action for a week after.

I paid £925 for this tiling job. Floor to ceiling porcelain. I supplied all the material and the room was empty of all furniture.

Its a bit of both. IE Its not 100% lined up in that corner. But grout hides a multitude of errors.

The walls on this job were well out of true so he had to pack out a fair bit. As you know with heavy porcelain you dont want to pack out too much... So some slight errors.

One of the "hindsights" on this job would have been to spent more time getting the walls absolutley plumb and square.

Truth be told is that when complete everything is hidden behind fixtures and fittings. Slight errors are hidden because the eye cant see the whole blank canvas.

In that corner a silcone joint has been put in prior to grouting.

If I had a gripe about the job then its the black tiles used in the shower. I used jet black as a feature wall for the chrome but the tiles were 2mm bigger than the naturals. So each course went up slightly higher until the top course looked like this

You can see the lines running away. At the time he was working so fast that he wouldnt let me use my diamond saw to remove the excess. "Will take too long..."

Every job is imperfect and that's one of the niggles I have to live with. But when people walk in they never notice half of this stuff. They just ooohhh about the black and chrome.
