Laying 600 x 600. Advice please.

I would look at putting a centre line form the middle of the door to the opposite wall. This way you would have a grout line running from the middle of the door to the opposite wall or a full tile centered on the door running to the wall. Looks better this way IMO because you'll be drawn to it every time you enter the room. As Joe said, you should also consider using other features such as the fireplace to center your tiles. Personal preferance really. Don't rush the setting out process, try a couple of options and see what looks best.

I would go for 12mm square notch give yourself a bit better chance of good coverage and skim the back of every tile with the flat side of trowel to increase the bond strength

It'll be coming up to getting retiled soon, if they haven't popped up from the original post in 2009!
