I'd be skimming the walls flat with rapid set flexi adhesive, you can't beat tiling onto a flat surface imo.

Agree with Doug and Bolter.
Never had a shrinkage problem with powdered adhesives either.

Urg, everyone is talking about shrinkage and flexibility all of a sudden .

Are you all talking about shrinkage in the scenario where you lay on one big wet layer of adhesive and then tile instead of level the wall, let it dry, add adhesive and tile.

Also, I looked at the spec sheet for BAL Rapidset and it said something about only using a layer of 6mm (or was it 10mm), I noticed that they do another prep product called "Quickset Render", would this be a better option as it says it can be laid on up to 20mm and it seems it is sold for wall levelling, crack filling and the likes. Obviously I'd then apply the tiles with tile adhesive.

Also levelling with my batten - I imagine it was cut in a jig so it's prolly pretty straight, but I'm not too fussed, I'm sure its at very least a damn sight more level than this wall currently is! But thanks for the tip none the less.
