Hi Guys

I have been asked for a general quote for tiling Limestone to a 38m2 wooden kitchen floor. I'm assuming floor boards but could be wrong. I'm not after quote advice, sorry thats not clear, my question is about the substrate.

I realise i don't have much info, such as limestone type but i was wondering about the substrate if i take the job on, can i tile straight onto ply or does it require a waterproof course? and would i need expansion joints on a floor that size?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Be gentle, it's my first time

sorry mate!
can't discuss pricing unless it's in the arms forum, not sure you have access to this but maybe you could pm somebody local for a price

ps-don't give people general quotes,go and see the job for yourself in case theres anything you will require extra

Thanks for the advice Dave, not helpfull without all the info and not sure what i'm jumping into

Hi Dave,

If the floor boards are solid enough and well screwed down fix Hardie boards over with single part flexible adhesive, (i.e. Mapei Kerflex) then screw them every 200mm whilst the adhesive is still soft, then tape and fill the joints - you can check other threads on the 'preparation' section of this forum for exact step by step instructions. This one is for fixing over wayrock but its the same procedure:

http://www.tilersforums.com/tile-ad...aring-floor-hardie-backerboard-then-self.html

You will then have an acceptable base for fixing your limestone with an adhsiev such as Mapei Keraflex Maxi white or Mapei Keraquick white (with Latex Plus additive if you fancy being double sure)

I would generally leave a perimeter movement joint if it was being covered by skirting and also if the room is longer than 8m just split it in two and stick a joint through the floor at the centre:thumbsup:Just be sure to discuss movement joint options with your customer, as they will need to know what they will see when the job is complete.

A movement joint through the floor? What about a perimeter expansion joint. There are not many domestic customers that want to see a joint in the floor and there are alternatives.

Thanks guys, couldn't have asked for a quicker more accurate response.

Very helpful

Not many domestic kitchens longer than 8m.....

Agreed but the true measurement for expansion joints is 5 metres, I still would not want one.
