Mapei UK Ltd is Sponsoring Gordon Smith, European Drag Racing/Nitro Funny Car Champion and the SHOCKWAVE Team this year!
‘Flash’ Gordon Smith has been an avid Drag Racing fan the majority his life and took the wheel at 22 years old driving a Triumph Herald travelling ¼ mile in 22 seconds!
The SHOCKWAVE Team formed around 12 years ago, where Gordon and fellow owner Dave Bryant, began working towards the championship title. The team heavily depends on sponsorship and donations; the unique sport allows for faster times in high speeds and in order to reach that pinnacle point the car uses Nitro injection – this is an expensive sport. The team reaches times that you won’t see in F1, Rally or any other spectator motor sport.

‘Flash’ Gordon today drives a Pontiac Firebird which will make around 300mph in ¼ mile in 5 seconds! The sport is not for the faint hearted.
The most serious injury Gordon has experienced was hitting the wall last year, which resulted in a couple of broken ribs. Gordon’s most prominent crash was three years ago when whilst travelling at 280 mph, the fuel tank exploded and blew the body right off the car! Ironically the Champ only suffered from singed eye brows; Gordon is fighting back to keep his title of European Drag Racing Champion this year!
Gordon’s day job is working as part of Mapei UK Ltd’s Sales team, in the South East. When asked, ‘What do love so much about Drag Racing?’ Gordon replies “The Exhilaration. The fans, the support they show. The speed you travel and that Drag Racing is a family sport, people who go can come in the pits and talk to you”.
Some of Mapei’s customers will have the opportunity to attend the qualifying rounds, semi-finals and finals this year, race dates include: May 22nd -25th, September 10th-13th, Mapei UK Ltd will be Santapod to show our support, if you’re at Santapod pop in and say hello to Gordon and the rest of the Shockwave Team!
