Marmox backer boards-fixing to wall

Hi all,

First post so here goes:

I've bought some 10mm Marmox backer boards to line the walls in a walk in style shower area I'm currently installing at home. I'll be installing on 2 walls, both are stud. I've removed plaster board and the stud work is not the best so my thoughts were to mount some 10mm marine ply on the stud to get a flat supportive surface, and then attach the marmox board to that using screws and adhesive.

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this approach.

Cheers

Hi,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

The studwork's solid enough, just not evenly spaced meaning that I'd end up with unsupported backer board edges with nothing to fix to....

Hi, and thanks for the warm welcome!

The stud is solid enough,it's just not evenly spaced meaning that I'd have loose, unsupported backer board edges. Figured it better if there is something flush to mount on?

Hi and welcome.....whats the centres of the studs, 10mm would need 300 centres/ 12.5mm would need 400 centres/ 600mm centres 20mm is recommended.

Thats part of the issue. The wall is approx 900mm and the stud is split 300 and 600. Figured if I lined with ply, I could get plenty of fixings in (making sure I screw into the studwork) as well as the adhesive?

Appologies if I'm duplicating on posts here but they don't seem to be uploading? Do they need to be approved?

The wall is approx 900mm and studs are split at 300 and 600 so that's part of the problem. Thought that by backing with ply and attaching with plenty of fixings and adhesive then the board will be fully supported and secured?

I could do yeah. Suppose this would give more solid support at edge of boards.

The other wall is same construction but skimmed plasterboard, so was goind to approach in similar way and just mount onto existing wall. Is there an issue with this?

I thought you meant the studwork was shot. I'm with whitebeam if the existing studs are sound just not spaced right or enough of them then just fit more studwork and forget the ply.

Agree. Put more timber in. You'll probably find rebuilding all the studwork would be cheaper than sheeting over with ply anyway. But if it's only 900 wide then i'd say around 3 lengths of cls would provide ample support, structure and noggins. It's around 3-4 quid a length in most "DIY" stores.

Ok,

So I spent today adding more timber to the wall and spaced to match the board so job's a good 'un. Cheers.

Now onto the other wall. It's plasterboard and plastered so was intending to attach straight onto this with adhesive and screws. There'sbit of curvature in the wall though. I placed a Moarmox board up against it and there's enough give in them to follow the wall. Am I saking for trouble if I attach like that do you think. Its a 2.5m wall so hoping I don't need to 'square it off'.

Thanks
