There’s some confusion here, the board will not break down no matter how wet it gets, but it will soak water up like a sponge! So if you want a dry wall behind your tiles - water proof it

If the studs are at 600 centres I'd find it quicker to use 12mm hardie and tank. Can any thickness xps board be used in that scenario?

I used 12mm on 2 floors recently, the first because it was very rough and I needed the extra height, I had a couple boards left so used them today on a small bathroom floor. There’s not one thing nice about them, except there strong as.
