So basicly you have more than 50% coverage.

You can use a heat gun to soften the glue and scrape up, then an option is to slurry coat the floor to accept a thin SLC covering.

This will give a nice flat floor to tile too..

cheers dave,i was thinking of hiring a floor grinder as its quite a big area or using something like nitromors but i'll give this a go first could work out a lot cheaper

Not a lover of nitromors.. but a floor grinder is the perfect option if you have the availability to use it.

Hi Johnny, & welcome, as Dave says.If the glue is stiff it'll scrape,though it's probably like
the bitumen stuff used on vynils as you describe it. Just a note of warning,some of these adhesives from the 60s contain asbestos!! On a couple of jobs in the past we were told to not sweep it,only vacuum then have it latexed over as to remove it would have to be done by a specialist. I suppose the safety thing is no dust & quality masks,consider having it tested.The stability is key to your next move.
