Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

I think that is a very wise choice mate.

I think you might have hit it on the head, I'll put it to him tommorow. I suppose if the brickwork beneath the plaster is fairly even, then a good lashing of primer will suffice ?

Thanks all for the great support :)

I think you can take someone to court even if your name is not registered at company house, if someone within a certain distance (not sure the exact distance) starts trading under the same name as yourself but it is extremely difficult to win the case and can be very costly. As Dave say's the best way to protect your name if you want to is register it.

Do not know how you stand on this but I have been tiling under the name A1 tiling for some time now and have noticed the name as one of your members although I am not aware of the location, can you operate under the same name as someone else?
Hi, just had a look at businessnames.co.uk and there are 10 companies listed as A1 tiling.
There are also 2 listed in the limited companies section.

Right guys lets try and sort out a difference of opinion. Have worked for a local builder different jobs, some tile on tile, some new plastered kitchens. The question i this and I want a honest reply no Rambo ones to tile a 21 Sq mtr bathroom ( i know you want to see it first) use your imagination standard sink, bath and wc. How long to do working a standard 8 hours a day. By the way it has not to look thrown on. Builder rekons 2 days.

Can you beleive I have never been asked to remove tiles. The question is once removed what is the best thing to do with the uncovered surface considering some of the old adhesive will remain.

tom most times you will be lucky if any of the plaster even remains under neath if your lucky you can remove adhesive with a wall paper steamer

Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

started a job today on a house where loads of other trades are working at same time was talking to the builder who was building extension and he says he has a tiler working on another job for him (16m bathroom walls) and has took him 4 weeks solid (8 hours a day) and customer is getting sick. but builder says tiler is doing a good job and is realising its his first job so is leaving him alone and making excuses for him and he will be finnished soon. but wont employ him again ( so warning to new tilers customers bathrooms are not best for your first job) i can remember my first bathroom took ages lots of problems (scratching head) do friends / family first on bathrooms

My first bathroom was a nightmare too!

It was 11.5m2 and took me on and off about 2 and a half weeks! I reckon it would have took 6 days if i could have been there everyday!

Taking the old tiles off (floor to ceiling) I estimated 1 day, but it took 2 good long days. Some was because the toilet wouldn't come off, but mainly because parts of the tiles had been fixed with a cement based adhesive.

Once i got them off I had to cut out and replace some old plaster board and then two walls had to be plastered. Then I had to contend with the fact the plasterer was complete cr*p, there were big lumps everywhere and he had missed some bits! The corners around the windows weren't even square, they were closer to being round! I spent a good few hours chipping away at plaster to make things more level!

Anyway, although it took longer with all these problems and the fact I couldn't go somedays as she was working nights, they were really happy with the job.

All new tilers will go through this at some stage! You just have to get on with ti!

Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

Whats the best way to remove old grout and replace it?????
My mother in law (well it would be wouldn't it??), has really old brown grout on her moustache - erm, sorry on her bathroom walls. She does get through about 27 Lambert & Butler every half hour so it may be to do with that even though she says it isn't...
Do I really have to take it all out and do it again or is there another way???

many thanks

Andy
