Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

started a job today on a house where loads of other trades are working at same time was talking to the builder who was building extension and he says he has a tiler working on another job for him (16m bathroom walls) and has took him 4 weeks solid (8 hours a day) and customer is getting sick. but builder says tiler is doing a good job and is realising its his first job so is leaving him alone and making excuses for him and he will be finnished soon. but wont employ him again ( so warning to new tilers customers bathrooms are not best for your first job) i can remember my first bathroom took ages lots of problems (scratching head) do friends / family first on bathrooms
learnt myself that it is best to take on work for friends and family first. First job floor. Set out for floor and then went back next day and picked up the wrong starting point, didnt realise until i got to the doorway between kitchen and utility and it fell in the middle of a full tile instead of being bridged by a joint as planned. Luckily finishing cuts were fine. Then own bathroom DO NOT FORGET TO ALLOW FOR THE BORDER. Set out for the bathroom got to the window then found a cut that should have been 35 mm below ended up being 15mm above due to the 50 mm border. Montolit tok care of the 15mm cut but it shows when starting out best to make those mistakes not for paying customers.
Having said all this a 16 m bathroom even starting out should no way take 4 weeks unless you are doing a couple of hours an evening

Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

Whats the best way to remove old grout and replace it?????
My mother in law (well it would be wouldn't it??), has really old brown grout on her moustache - erm, sorry on her bathroom walls. She does get through about 27 Lambert & Butler every half hour so it may be to do with that even though she says it isn't...
Do I really have to take it all out and do it again or is there another way???

many thanks

Andy

There is a grout colourant product by aqua mix that works brilliantly. It basically bonds a new epoxy layer onto the existing grout. Can be white or one of the other 24 colours. Saves taking old grout out and risking chipping tiles.

Tanking is basically waterproofing. You would use it in areas where there will be a lot of water on the tiles. For example a shower area. It's very straightforward to do.

BAL make one that comes in a kit. You get the primer to be applied to the walls before the tanking, you get the tub of tanking, which when you put it on and it has dried it turns to a rubbery type consistence. You also get a roll of tape which is used for gaps bigger than a few mm that the tanking won't fill. You just paint or roll the stuff on, very easy I assure you but not cheap! The BAL kit is about £60

Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

I know i'm not really a newbie anymore but i do have a question..........

When i am grouting up i find that my thong really gets stuck into my bum crack and it becomes very sore!!

I was going to start wearing my lycra boxer shorts but then because of all the sweat i know i would just be left with skid marks!!

So my question is should i stick with wearing my favorite thong and just deal with a sore bum crack..... or should i put up with having stinky skid marks in my boxers but have a healthy raison hole??

Thanks

TJ

Ah ha!... something I have experience with!

TJ I can help you here! I too found that my Leopard skin thong was giving me a sore, and also very itchy, crack. I tried Johnson baby powder to help stop the sweating and itching but to no avail!

Then one day, while I was doing to washing I discovered that my girlfriend also had thongs! I picked out a nice silk one in a manly pink (you know the pink I mean, the one all the blokes wear that make them think they look cool!)

I have never looked back since. Due to the very soft fabric I have no itching and no sweat. The only side affect is I cannot wear shorts due to lack of....erm....support!

Hi

I am a new tiler and have a few questions about tanking
I have not heard of this term before I started reading these forums
could someone tell me what it is exactly and where and when its needed

schluter do a waterproof polthylene membrane called KERDI . this comes on a roll 1mtr wide and is quicker and chaeper to use than conventional tanking kits, plus no time waiting for it to dry as you can tile on it straight away....dave...

p.s. here's a link to there website... Schluter KERDI waterproof matting from Schluter systems: suitable for wet rooms and shower areas

Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

Hi Dan,

Do you know what the BS5385 is for 'dot and dab' tiling?

Ive tiled large format porcelain tiles onto uneven gypsum plaster walls and theyve come loose. Been searching the net for extracts from BS5385-1 without luck. Not willing to pay £120 if it doent have what im looking for.

Do you know where I can hire a copy or download this reference booklet?

Warm Regards...
----
Just to add to above,

although Ive dot & dabbed the tiles they have +75% adhesive coverage to the wall.
Any reference to this in the book?

Thanks...

Re: Any new tilers stuck at all, with anything?

Used Granfix 1 part Flexible Rapidset, Walls were adequately primed beforehand.
A sales rep from granfix had a look at the premises and noted that it could be down to settlement - it was a newbuild house and the walls could have shrunk over time.

Still in dispute though, and need to know what BS5385 states.
Is it worth buying this doc, and if so what section should I order?

Regards
Ben
