Newb help - 1st proper job

Falcone,
I noticed in 1 of your earlier replies, that you are currently working full time.
I recently had a mate who wanted all sorts done for pennies and although i was after the experience and the money, I thought

1. Would it be worth the aggro having his mrs's hovering around bitching about every little thing i done and,

2. Then working my nuts for pennies only to end up being branded "cheap".

So i found it far more satisfying just to tell them that i was far to busy and they should try to get another tiler, because as usual most customers want you to have started yesterday and its a great feeling when they ring you a few weeks later to say they cant get anyone and funny old thing - Your price has gone up a couple of extra quid, If they dont contact you back, there is every chance the old man has done it, so they will still call you at some point to do a repair job.

Honestly - Stick with it, because they need you more than you need them.

The first job I did after training was lay 20+ sqm for a mate in quarry tiles (**** ones from B&Q as well, think the pics are still on here some where). I billed him £250 as I owed him a few favours, him being a gas plumber an all. I told him what my usual rates were and what I was saving him but ooooh no he knew better.
He gave me so much **** about it, thought we were mates, dick turpin, robin hood etc. He rang me a few weeks back to do a few more jobs, after he had been on site with some tilers charging up to £400+ a day!!!
Needless to say he saw the bargain he'd got.

Never sell yourself too cheap mate.

I always quote a job for fixing tiles, i start at £20 a sq m and work up depending on tile size, area etc! I then say any prep work ( often not seen when quoting for work) is at £ 15 per hour or what ever u work for. Then when u get there and the removed tiles are an absolute mess u can fill holes or remove and replace plasterboard as u see fit. I did a kitchen canopy recently, 5m sq at £200, when i turned up the walls where shot and the missus wanted a fancy (5 hrs) pattern. As id priced the job ages ago without saying any of the above it took 3 days and i lost out big time.....i live and learn!

your brave m8 lol ill say that much.

your stripping 16m2 for 50 quid aswell ?, that may take you a whole day just to get the tiles of the walls, then you have to scrape the walls and fill in holes, if that was my first job then i would be charging more for the stripping

thanks for the comments...

hopefully i'll get it.

I'm honestly not to fussed about stripping the tiles off and having to potentially prep the walls (hopefully they'll come off as easy as mine did in the bathroom lol). It'll be a good experience for me doing a whole bathroom. lots of hurdles to get over and it'll be a good experience.

If I do a good job then her daughter can vouch for me in my current workplace and I'll get lots of work out of it.

Unlucky bud, however may be for the best as clients like this want the world for sweet fa and it could of gone boobies up.
Anyway if she's serious and gets some other quotes she'll soon come running back. Like I said above, never sell yourself or your ability short to try and please a customer, likelihood is it will turn out sour and cost you too much.

Good luck on the next one bud.

I think when she said it was too near xmas she was expecting me to go "oh, ok, how does £*** sound" I wasnt gonna budge from my price...

cheers Devon
