Fiona, my wife suffered the same "block" ie are females geared to this line of work scenario, she did her city and guilds and bacame qualified to work anywhere in the world, to the highest specification doing "welding", this was up against a male orientated workforce that said a female couldn't/shouldn't be doing a "man's job. You've got the will, you do it!!

God, I can't believe that in this day and information age there are still people out there going on about the old chestnut who should do what and when, when history has shown over and over again that all individuals, male and female are born with different abilities, talents, strengths and weaknesses which are there to be nurtured or overcome in all of us.
Surely anyone who thinks they can comment on the suitability (or not) of a complete stranger to pursue any kind of activity to whatever degree must be limiting him/herself in some way, too, trying to fit life into conceptual boxes conveniently labelled.
The difference between sexes is supposed to be fun, interesting, and life enhancing as much as friends and couples are meant to complement each other for the development and benefit of all concerned, so this kind of garbage about telling anyone to 'stay at home' really gets up my nose.

I consider myself fortunate that I have found this forum that is about bringing each of us on instead of putting each other down, and that is largely down to the Dan and Dave and all the moderators who have so brilliantly set the tone to make everyone feel welcome. Without it I would have never done the tiling course, just struggled on by myself and would have been forced to either continue working on my own staying within my comfort zone or be pushed into the politics and games of the art world which doesn't really suit me. Freedom comes from within, and when it is nurtured from without like usually on here, well, nothing can beat the exhileration of discovery of new possibilites.... and being able to share it with like-minded folk...

Phew, just had to get that off my chest... much better now....

I just found this in my PM inbox this morning and thought it best to post it in its unedited entirety to represent Al's thoughts on the matter.

Hi there. Al here.

I am very sad about the reaction to my post. never did i make a suggestion that Fiona as a woman should not be a tiler. I simply suggested that she will find it difficult to get her money back. given her circumstances I still think I am right, I dont have do be. the age of the male chauvenist pig have long gone and I never had any part of it.

being 64 years of age I have done all my arguing I dont need any more. as a person, well I would have to be the most even tempered person you would ever meet. would you know me personally you would be totally ashamed for taking such a cheap shot at me.
never the less the very best to you

Al

And a fine good morning to you also, Al, from me (48) and hubby (62), too...
