oh-oh, dead Computer, burning smell...

heyho..am on my netbook, turned off my main pc last night, saw the turning off screen and left the room, come down this morning, there is a sharp, acidic type burnt smell in my office, and the pc won't switch on, socket ok, monitor, lights, phone, all ok, but pc dead as a dodo. NOWWW...can something burn out in there and leave my hard drive intact or do I have to prepare myself for maybe having lost a large chunk off my stuff drive - have some things backed up but ran out of memory so all the recent stuff would be gone, also, can't access my emails... :sosp: and it's Sunday, of course... :lol:

the processors tend to burn out,the hard drive should be ok and should be accessible ,figures crossed :smiley2:

my be a good idea to look at a mat with extra built in fan for future use

I've got a networked 1TB hard drive and use "sync toy" to back up my PC and wife's laptop to (she's amatuer photographer, got about 100,000 photos so need big drive.) cost me about £100

Your hard drive will be fine. Its very very rare for a HDD to fail. If you are near me, I could sort it for you, but I fear you arent!

Oh, that sounds reassuring! Luckily I got some work emails sent off before all that happened, and I have the netbook right now, so not too desperate as yet, but I'd hate to lose some recent photos... fingers crossed eh?

If your PC gets fixed, then thats solution A
if you get a new machine then Amazon.co.uk: hard drive enclosure one of those will sort you out (depending on what hard drive you have)

Just pop the old HDD in, plug USB into new machine, and take what you want. You also have just made an external HDD in the process format it, and use it for storage!
